Grace Lucka fired a one-hit shutout in the opener while
Riley Holmberg,
Kim Vidlak and Haley Murphy each recorded three hits in the second game to lead the Wayne State College softball team in a 4-0 and 9-5 NSIC softball sweep Friday afternoon over the University of Mary at the Minot State Air-Supported Dome in Minot, North Dakota. The Wildcats are now 9-23 and 4-6 in the league while UMary is 5-22 and 0-8.
The story of the first game was the pitching of Lucka, who allowed just a fourth inning single as the lone hit for the Marauders in the contest.
The game was scoreless until the fourth inning when WSC came up with three runs to take the lead. Vidlak singled, then
Paiton Tornberg followed with an RBI double.
Louisa Stowman tripled to bring home Tornberg while Madi Gomez followed with an RBI groundout to score Stowman for the 3-0 lead.
An insurance run by the Wildcats in the fifth made the score 4-0. Murphy reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a Vidlak triple.
WSC held a 6-1 edge in hits over the Marauders. Vidlak was 2 for 3 with a triple, RBI and run scored. Holmberg had a pair of singles while Stowman tripled and Tornberg doubled.
The second game saw the Wildcats jump out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and the 'Cats produced 13 hits in the 9-5 win to complete the sweep.
A bases-loaded clearing double by Madi Gomez highlighted the first inning.
Natalie Arbizu added an RBI double in the third scoring Murphy (singled) for a 5-2 Wildcat lead.
The 'Cats added three runs in the fourth for a 8-2 lead. Stowman had a two-run triple while Murphy chipped in an RBI single.
UMary plated two runs in the fourth and one more in the sixth for an 8-5 lead and WSC closed the scoring with one run in the seventh on a Vidlak RBI single to make the final score 9-5.
Murphy was 3 for 3 with two runs scored to pace a balanced Wildcat attack. Holmberg went 3 for 5 with a double and run scored while Vidlak was 3 for 5 with an RBI and run scored. Gomez and Arbizu each doubled with Stowman adding a triple.
Sophomore Sami Felt started the game and worked the first 3 1/3 innings. Freshman
Sophie Stuart worked the remaining 3 2/3 innings and earned the win, allowing just two hits and one run.
Wayne State will face Minot State Saturday at 8 and 10 a.m. in NSIC games at the Minot State Dome.
