Northern State women top Wildcats 62-53

            Northern State used a 47-30 advantage in rebounding to lead the Wolves in a 62-53 victory over Wayne State College Friday evening in a Northern Sun Conference women's basketball game played in Aberdeen, South Dakota at Wachs Arena.  NSU is now 11-4 and 7-2 in the NSIC with the win while WSC drops to 4-9 and 1-9 in the league.
            The host Wolves led the entire first quarter, building an early 11-3 lead.  Northern State was still in front 20-13 with just over two minutes left in the quarter when Wayne State closed the quarter strong with a basket by Maya Fitzpatrick and back-to-back baskets from junior Tate Norblade to cut the Wolves' lead to 22-19 at the end of the quarter.
            The Wildcats carried their scoring run into the second quarter as Norblade hit a 3-pointer to go with a layup followed by a Rachel Dahlen basket that gave WSC a 26-22 lead at the 7:24 mark of the quarter.
            Northern State then held the 'Cats scoreless the next 3:38, scoring nine straight points, to take the lead for good at 31-28.  The Wolves ended the first half with a 36-32 lead.
            The host Wolves opened the third quarter scoring the first six points that led to a 13-2 run in the first 6:20 to push the lead to 49-36.  The Wildcats closed the quarter making just 3 of 18 shots as Northern State held a 51-38 cushion.
            The fourth quarter saw Northern State hold a double-digit lead for most of the final 10 minutes.  NSU held a 56-40 lead, but WSC scored seven straight points to get within nine at 56-47 on a Carsyn Boswell jumper with 5:59 to play.
            Northern State then pushed the lead back to 13 points and finished with the 62-53 victory.
            Norblade led Wayne State in scoring with a career-high 17 points on 6 of 7 shooting from the field and a perfect 5 for 5 at the stripe.  Boswell also hit double figures with 10 points.
            Wayne State shot 33.8 percent for the game making 22 of 65 shots.  The 'Cats were just 4 of 23 behind the 3-point line and 5 of 6 at the charity stripe.
            Northern State was led by Rianna Fillipi with 18 points followed by Madelyn Bragg with 15 and Decontee Smith with 11 points.
            The Wolves made 24 of 54 shots for 44.4 percent, going 6 of 20 from the 3-point line and 8 for 15 at the foul stripe.
            NSU held a commanding 47-30 edge in rebounding over the Wildcats.  Rachel Dahlen had six caroms for WSC to go with two blocked shots.
            The Wildcats play again Saturday night visiting the University of Mary in Bismarck, North Dakota at 5:30 p.m.
