Trey Deveaux and
Alec Millender combined for 36 points as Wayne State shot 52 percent for the game as the Wildcats completed an NSIC men's basketball road sweep Saturday afternoon with a 73-53 win at the University of Mary in Bismarck, North Dakota. The Wildcats move to 11-7 and 4-7 in the NSIC while UMary drops to 6-10 and 1-9.
The Wildcats led the entire game with the exception of 58 seconds early in the contest.
With WSC leading 10-9 at the 10:31 mark, the Wildcats went on a 14-4 run over the next five minutes and took their first double digit lead of the game at 24-13 on a
Noah Erickson fast break dunk with 5:19 remaining in the half.
Wayne State closed the first half with a 32-18 lead thanks to 53 percent (14-26) shooting in the opening half while also holding the host Marauders to just 27 percent (8-29) shooting.
The Wildcats maintained a double-digit lead for much of the second half, holding off an early UMary rally, and the 'Cats surged at the end of the half to finish with the 20-point win.
WSC was in front 35-20, but the Marauders scored six straight points to get the Wildcat lead down to single digits.
UMary got as close as 37-29 with 15:16 remaining, but Wayne State pushed the lead back into double figures and was ahead 60-40 with just under six minutes to play before closing with the 73-53 win.
Deveaux led Wayne State in scoring with 19 points followed by Millender with 17 as a total of 10 different Wildcats scored in the contest.
WSC ended the game shooting 52.8 percent from the field on 28 of 53. The 'Cats were 4 for 14 behind the arc and 13 of 21 from the charity stripe.
Rich Ashu was the top scorer for the University of Mary with eight points.
The Marauders made 17 of 55 shots for 30.9 percent, going 5 of 19 from the 3-point line and 14 of 16 at the charity stripe.
UMary out-rebounded Wayne State 38-30.
Sean Stokes was the top WSC rebounder with five.
Millender was credited with six assists while Deveaux had two blocked shots.
Wayne State is on the road again next weekend visiting St. Cloud State Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Bemidji State Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
