Wayne State used a 20-8 fourth quarter scoring advantage to rally from a 43-38 deficit as the Wildcats snapped a six-game losing skid Saturday evening with a 58-51 Northern Sun Conference women's basketball win at Bemidji State. The 'Cats are now 5-10 and 2-10 in the league while the host Beavers fall to 3-12 and 0-11 in the league.
The 'Cats opened the game with a 6-2 lead, but Bemidji State rallied and scored the final six points of the quarter to grab a 14-10 lead after one quarter.
Bemidji State pushed the advantage to 11 points (25-14) in the second quarter, using 50 percent shooting (7 of 14) to take a 29-22 halftime lead over the Wildcats.
The Beavers maintained their lead in the third quarter as WSC held a 16-14 scoring edge to cut the Bemidji State lead to 43-38 heading into the fourth quarter.
Wayne State scored the first six points of the fourth quarter and took their first lead since the opening quarter at 44-43 on a
Maya Fitzpatrick basket.
Bemidji State scored on their next two possessions to grab a 47-44 lead, but the Wildcats got back-to-back baskets from Wayne freshman
Brooklyn Kruse and another from
Rachel Dahlen to take the for good at 50-47.
A three-point play by Bemidji's Alyssa Hill got the Beavers as close as one at 52-51 with 2:02 to play.
But Wayne State sealed the win down the stretch going 6 for 6 at the free throw line with Kruse,
Carsyn Boswell and
Jordon Heckert each hitting two free throws for the final margin of victory 58-51.
Graduate student forward
Britney Ho paced Wayne State with 16 points in the win. Kruse followed with a season-high 14 points on 5 of 9 shooting from the field while Fitzpatrick also hit double digits with 13.
Wayne State made 18 of 43 shots for 41.9 percent, including 1 of 6 behind the arc. The 'Cats were 21 for 30 at the free throw line.
Bemidji State's top scorer was Alyssa Hill with 14 points and Amme Sheforgen scoring 13.
The Beavers shot 36.4 percent from the field making 20 of 55 shots. BSU was 4 of 20 from 3-point range and 7 for 8 at the line.
WSC held a 34-32 cushion in rebounding thanks to eight boards from
Abby Kopecky.
Tate Norblade had three steals while Ho was credited with three assists.
The Wildcats play at home next Saturday afternoon, hosting Minot State at 12:30 p.m. in Rice Auditorium.
