Wayne State dropped just its second game of the season to the University of Sioux Falls after converting only one of their four red zone appearances. USF scored 10 points off turnovers compared to Wayne's zero, with the final score being 23-13. Wayne drops to 6-2 overall and 5-2 in conference play.
Sioux Falls opened the scoring four minutes into the contest but were unable to convert the two-point attempt, going up 6-0. With 3:49 remaining in the first, USF scored their second touchdown of the day to go up 13-0. Forty-five second later,
Latravious Boyd would make a house call of 75-yard pass from
Nick Bohn for Wayne State's first score.
A three-and-out by the 'Cats defense gave the offense the ball back but turned it over three plays later after a deep pass got caught up in the Memorial Stadium wind at the five-yard line. USF would march down 81 yards and score their third touchdown of the half.
Another costly turnover gave the Cougars control of the ball at the Wayne 28 but were held to a field goal by the WSC defense. The two teams would trade punts back and forth to close out the half, with the Cougars leading 23-7 at the break.
Wayne State opened the half and were stuffed at the one-yard line after going 74 yards in 12 plays. The defense for the Wildcats forced their third three-and-out of the contest, forcing Sioux Falls to punt from the back of their own endzone. The offense was unable to capitalize on plus field position, throwing another interception at the USF one-yard line. The defense forced another three-and-out highlighted by two tackles for no gain by
Carter Sitzman. USF was held to just six yards of offense in the third.
With 14:01 in the fourth quarter the Wildcat defense took the field with the ball on the USF one after a 63-yard punt by
Trevor Marshall. A forced fumble by
Alex Schall at the USF 15 gave Wayne State the ball back on the USF 12. The Wildcats were unable to convert on fourth and nine on a pass intended for
Kendrick Watkins-Hogue. Two tackles for loss by
Brayden Chaney on first down and then
Clyde Hinton and Sitzman on second forced USF to punt. The 'Cats ate up 3:09 before attempting their fifth fourth down conversion of the day. Another endzone target for Watkins-Hogue fell incomplete, allowing the Cougars to take over on their own nine.
The Wildcat defense pushed Sioux Falls back to the two-yard line courtesy of two sacks from
Kaden Sutton and Sitzman. A four-yard punt return by
Jacob Byrd set up the offense at the USF 35-yard line. Bohn's fourth completion of the drive led to a Ashen Schmaderer 11-yard touchdown reception. The Wildcats were unable to convert on their two-point attempt. A
Boston Hensley onside kick was recovered by the Cougars at the WSC 45. USF would convert one first down and allowed them to kneel out the clock.
Wayne State's defense held Sioux Falls to just 17 yards in the second half and forced six three-and-outs in the game. Sitzman led the defense with 10 tackles and 3.5 TFLs. Dexter Larson followed up with nine total tackles. Marshall averaged 47.5 yards per punt with two of them downed inside the 20-yard line and a pair of them being over 50 yards.
Luke Lambert and Sitzman each had two sacks for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats are on the road next Saturday visiting Bemidji State in a 1 p.m. contest.
