Bemidji State scoring run too much for Wildcats in 37-20 road setback

Box Score             Bemidji State scored 30 unanswered points after Wayne State opened the game with an interception return for a touchdown as the Beavers won their fifth straight contest over the Wildcats with a 37-20 Northern Sun Conference football victory Saturday afternoon in Bemidji, Minnesota.  Both teams are now 6-3 on the season and 5-3 in league play.
            The opening score of the game came from the Wildcat defense as on Bemidji State's first series Marzion Cosby intercepted a Sam McGath pass and sprinted 19 yards to the end zone for a touchdown giving the 'Cats a 7-0 lead at the 8:56 mark of the first quarter. 
            Bemidji State then scored on their next five possessions in the first half to take control of the game building a 27-7 advantage at intermission.
            Following the Wildcat pick six for the early lead, Bemidji State drove down the field on the ensuing drive, covering 75 yards on 11 plays with running back Jayden Washington scoring on a 12-yard run to tie the score at 7-7.
            BSU took the lead for good at 10-7 on a 26-yard Connor Mantelli field goal early in the second quarter (12:05). 
            Bemidji State's next score came off a Wildcat turnover as the Beavers recovered a fumble at the BSU 42.  Three plays later, the Beavers found the end zone on a 10-yard pass from McGath to Brice Peters putting Bemidji State in front 17-7 at the 9:37 mark of the second quarter.
            Later in the quarter, Bemidji State drove 89 yards on 10 plays with McGath finding a wide open Aundreus Griffin for a 41-yard strike putting the Beavers ahead 24-7.
            Bemidji State closed the first half scoring with 12 seconds left on a 36-yard field goal from Mantelli to make the score 27-7 at intermission.
            The Beavers opened the second half scoring on a 32-yard field goal by Mantelli with 9:46 to play third quarter. 
            On the ensuing drive, Wayne State ended a streak of 30 unanswered points by Bemidji State as senior quarterback Nick Bohn found tight end Trey Miller on an eight-yard scoring pass to cap a nine-play, 65-yard drive to reduce the Beaver lead to 30-14 at the 6:54 mark of the third quarter.
            Following a Bemidji State punt, the Wildcats scored again as Bohn fired a 30-yard scoring strike to redshirt sophomore Kendrick Watkins-Hogue cutting the Beaver advantage to 30-20 following a missed two-point conversion.
            The lone score of the fourth quarter came from Bemidji State on a two-yard run by Justin Incaprera with 9:24 to play making the final score 37-20.
            Bemidji State gained 478 yards of offense in the game to Wayne State's 225.  The 'Cats were limited to just 42 yards rushing and had 183 passing.
            Bohn completed 20 of 40 passes for 183 yards and two scores.  Watkins-Hogue had five receptions for 82 yards and one TD while Ashten Schmaderer hauled in seven catches for 57 yards.
            Senior linebacker Alex Schall had eight tackles for the Wildcat defense followed by Clyde Hinton and Dexter Larsen with seven each.  Cosby had the early 19-yard interception return for a touchdown. 
            The Wildcats will be at home next Saturday hosting Northern State in a 12 p.m. contest at Bob Cunningham Field in Wayne.
