Wayne State used goals from five different players in posting a 5-0 victory over Minnesota Crookston Sunday afternoon in a Northern Sun Conference women's soccer contest played at the WSC Soccer Pitch. The Wildcats improved to 5-5-5 overall and 4-3-4 in the NSIC with the win while the Golden Eagles drop to 1-12-2 and 1-10-1 in league play.
The Wildcats opened the scoring in the 19
th minute when junior midfielder
Kaylee Herall scored her first goal of the season with an assist by
Paige Pemberton putting WSC ahead 1-0.
WSC scored again at the 30:02 mark when senior
Halena Handel recorded an unassisted goal for a 2-0 Wildcat advantage.
Senior defender
Morgan Rhodes closed the first half scoring for the Wildcats blasting a long shot past the UMC goalkeeper at the 36:36 mark for a 3-0 Wayne State lead at intermission.
Junior midfielder
Paige Pemberton opened the second half scoring just 1:40 into the half with an assist from
Maia Vacks for a 4-0 Wildcat lead.
The final goal of the contest came in the 72
nd minute when junior Alyssa Ferrin converted a penalty kick making the final score 5-0.
Wayne State held a 27-15 advantage in shots over Minnesota Crookston including 16-4 in shots on goal. The Wildcats had a 6-1 advantage on corner kicks.
Pemberton had five shots (four on goal) with one goal and one assist for the Wildcats. Other goal scorers for the Wildcats were Herall, Handel, Rhodes and Ferrin.
Goalkeepers
Sidney Truman and
Alexa Hofstetter combined for the team's sixth shutout of the season. Truman played the opening 45 minutes to earn the win, recording one save. Hofstetter posted 45 minutes of playing time in the second half and was credited with three saves.
The Wildcats hit the road next weekend for key NSIC contests at the University of Mary Friday at 1 p.m. and at Minot State Sunday for a 12 p.m. contest.
