A scoring explosion of three goals in the final 12 minutes by Wayne State College snapped a scoreless tie giving the Wildcats a 3-0 victory at the University of Mary in a Northern Sun Conference women's soccer contest Friday afternoon at the MDU Resources Community Bowl in Bismarck, North Dakota. The win gives the Wildcats records of 6-5-5 overall and 5-3-4 in the NSIC while the Marauders are now 8-4-3 and 6-3-3 in league games.
For the first 78 minutes of the contest, UMary controlled all statistical categories. The Marauders held a commanding 21-9 advantage in shots on goal, including 12-6 in a scoreless first half that saw UMary record four of the five corner kicks in the opening half.
But Wayne State junior midfielders
Paige Pemberton and
Alaina Sorensen took over the contest for the Wildcats in the final 12 minutes recording a combined three goals giving WSC a much-needed road victory to kept the team's chances alive of qualifying for the NSIC Tournament.
Pemberton opened the scoring at the 78:13 mark when her corner kick curled into the high right corner of the goal putting the 'Cats in front 1-0.
Less than two minutes later WSC scored again as
Maia Vacks found Sorensen on a pass and blasted a 25-yard shot past the UMary goalkeeper for another Wildcat score and a 2-0 lead at the 80
th minute.
An insurance goal for Wayne State came with just 2:46 left in the contest when the Wildcats clinched the win with an empty net goal. Junior forward
Reagan Allen delivered a ball to Sorensen in front of the goal for her team leading sixth goal of the season to cap the 3-0 Wayne State victory.
UMary finished the contest with a 22-13 edge in shots and 9-5 advantage in shots on goal. The Marauders had an 11-4 advantage in corner kicks on the Wildcats and was called for eight fouls to five on WSC.
Sorensen led Wayne State with four shots and two on goal that included a pair of goals in the final 10 minutes. Pemberton followed with three shots and one on goal including the game-winner, her fifth goal of the season.
Erin Peters and Vacks each added two shots in the win.
Fifth-year goalkeeper
Sidney Truman recorded nine saves in the shutout victory, her fifth shutout of the year.
Wayne State is in action again Sunday afternoon visiting Minot State in a 12 p.m. NSIC contest.
