#7 Minnesota State used two first half goals to defeat Wayne State College 2-0 Monday afternoon in the opening round of the 2024 Northern Sun Conference Women's Soccer Tournament played at Mankato, Minnesota. The host Mavericks improved to 13-1-5 with the win while the Wildcats end the season at 7-7-5.
Minnesota State scored early in the contest at the 6:48 mark to take a 1-0 lead as Anna Van Wyngarden scored from the top of the box on a shot that bounced off the hands of Wildcat goalkeeper
Sidney Truman and just broke the goal line for a score.
The Mavericks added another goal in the 28
th minute when Amara Smith blasted a shot into the left corner of the goal past Truman for a 2-0 MSU lead at intermission.
Wayne State had three shots on goal in the opening half and two more in the second half of the contest.
MSU held a 28-8 advantage in shots and 12-5 in shots on goal. The Mavericks held a 6-3 upper hand in corner kicks. Minnesota State was whistled for seven fouls to just two on the Wildcats.
