Carsyn Boswell sent the game into overtime with a three-point play and then scored the final five points in overtime to help Wayne State hold off Winona State 66-63 in overtime in a Northern Sun Conference women's basketball game played Saturday afternoon at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. WSC is now 4-3 and 1-2 in the league while Winona State is 5-4 and 1-2 in the NSIC.
Both teams jumped out of the gate quickly in a high-scoring first quarter, trading six ties and three lead changes ending with Winona State holding an 18-17 lead after one quarter.
The pace of play slowed in the second quarter as both teams struggled shooting the ball. Winona State took a five-point lead at 22-17 at the 7:57 mark, but the Wildcats held the Warriors without a point for the next 7:30 and
Maya Fitzpatrick's 3-pointer gave the Wildcats a 25-22 lead with 2:52 to play in the half.
Winona State ended their scoreless drought with a trey with 26 seconds left in the half as the game was tied 25-25 at intermission.
Early in the third quarter with Winona State leading 29-27, WSC used baskets by Boswell,
Maya Fitzpatrick and
Brooklyn Kruse to take a 33-29 lead.
WSC still held a 37-36 advantage with 2:34 to play in the quarter, but Winona State closed the quarter with seven quick points to take a 43-37 lead after three quarters.
The two teams traded six point runs at the start of the fourth quarter. Winona State was still in front 54-50 with 3:30 to play when Kruse converted a three-point play to cut the Warrior lead to one.
After a Winona State basket gave the Warriors a 56-53 lead with 44 seconds to play, Boswell drove into the lane and drew a foul for a three-point play with 29 seconds to play knotting the score at 56-56.
Winona State had one last chance to win the game in regulation but was short on a layup in the closing seconds sending the game into overtime.
WSC raced out to a seven-point lead early in the overtime for their biggest lead of the game. A
Kylah vanDonkersgoed 3-pointer followed by baskets from
Meg Rietz and Boswell gave the 'Cats a 63-56 advantage.
Winona State got within two at 63-61 with 1:50 to play, but Boswell converted a layup to push the lead to four at 65-61. The Warriors scored again with 11 seconds left to cut the lead to 65-63.
Boswell was fouled and made one of two free throws with seven seconds left for a 66-63 cushion.
The Wildcats denied Winona State a 3-point shot in the final seven seconds and WSC held on for the win.
Boswell's 14 points led one of four Wildcats in double figures for Wayne State. Kruse added 11 with vanDonkersgoed and
Tate Norblade each scoring 10.
Wayne State was 28 of 65 from the field for 43.1 percent, making just 3 of 16 3-pointers while connecting on 7 of 10 free throws.
For Winona State, Vivica Bretton scored 18 points with Olivia Gamoke adding 15 and Hailey Markworth 10.
The Warriors shot 42.6 percent from the field making 26 of 61 shots. WSU was 6 for 20 from the 3-point line and 5 of 5 at the charity stripe.
Wayne State held a 40-29 advantage in rebounding on the Warriors thanks to nine boards from vanDonkersgoed and six by
Abby Kopecky.
Maya Fitzpatrick led the Wildcats in assists (4) and blocked shots (3) to go with two steals.
The Wildcats will be on the road next weekend for NSIC games at #19 Concordia-St. Paul Friday at 5:30 p.m. and at Minnesota Duluth Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. contest.
