Wayne State used a three-run home run from senior
Dylan Sweeney and three hits and three RBI from freshman shortstop
Jordyn Rochholz to post a 9-1 win over Northeastern State of Oklahoma Saturday afternoon at the Alvy Early Memorial Softball Tournament in Bentonville, Arkansas. WSC is now 1-2 on the year while NSU is 3-4.
The 'Cats opened the scoring with two runs in the second inning as
Hayley Murphy walked and scored on an RBI groundout from
Haylee Weber. The second run came when
Mary Krystofiak singled and scored on a Rochholz single.
WSC added three runs in the top of the third for a 5-0 lead. Rochholz and Krystofiak each had run-scoring singles to highlight a four-hit inning with one Riverhawk error.
After Northeastern State scored in the bottom of the third to make the score 5-1, Wayne State got three runs in the top of the sixth on a three-run homer from Sweeney to put the 'Cats in front 8-1.
Wayne State closed the scoring in the seventh as
Abby Husing singled with two outs and scored on a double from Rochholz to make the final score 9-1.
WSC had 11 hits in the game to five for Northeastern State. Rochholz was 3 for 4 with a double and three RBI. Sweeney was 2 for 3 with a three-run homer, three RBI and two runs scored. Krystofiak went 2 for 4 with two runs scored.
Sami Felt fired four innings, allowing just one run on three hits, to pick up the win and move to 1-1 on the season. Sophomore reliever
Sophie Stuart worked the final three innings and gave up just two hits with four strikeouts.
Wayne State closes play at the Alvy Early Memorial Tournament Saturday afternoon facing Washburn at 1:30 p.m. in Bentonville, Arkansas.
