Wildcats fall at Winona State

            Junior Maya Fitzpatrick scored a game-high 18 points on 8 of 14 shooting, but Wayne State fell at Winona State Saturday evening 70-59 in Northern Sun Conference women's basketball played in Winona, Minnesota.  The host Warriors are now 8-16 and 7-12 in the NSIC with the win while WSC falls to 5-16 and 2-16 in league games.
            The first quarter saw three ties and three lead changes between the two clubs.  WSC held an 8-7 lead following a Delaney Clark layup, but Winona State scored the next seven points to take a 14-8 lead and closed the opening quarter with a 16-12 advantage.
            Wayne State's Brooklyn Kruse opened the second quarter with a basket to cut the Warrior lead to two, but Winona State rattled off eight straight points for a 24-14 lead at the 6:47 mark and closed the quarter outscoring WSC 21-12 to take a 37-24 lead at intermission.
            The 'Cats made 7 of 13 shots in the third quarter, but could gain little ground on the Warriors who maintained a double digit advantage much of the quarter and finished with a 51-41 lead.
            Winona State took one of their biggest leads of the game at 60-46 with just over five minutes to play.  WSC made one last run and got within seven at 62-55 on a Meg Rietz 3-pointer with 2:07 to play but the Warriors made 6 of 6 free throws plus a basket late to seal the 70-59 win.
            Fitzpatrick was the lone Wildcat in double figures with 18 points, going 8 of 14 from the field.  She also had a team-high four steals and four rebounds.
            WSC was 24 of 59 from the field for 40.7 percent, going 6 for 23 from 3-point range and 5 of 6 at the charity stripe.
            Alex Dornfeld had 14 points and 12 rebounds for Winona State.  Emma Carpenter and Hailey Markworth each added 10 points.
            Winona State shot 42.6 percent from the floor making 23 of 54 shots.  WSU was 9 of 27 behind the arc and 15 for 19 at the line.
            The Warriors held a sizeable 40-26 edge in rebounding over WSC.  Carsyn Boswell had five caroms for the 'Cats.
Kruse finished with three blocked shots for WSC.
            The Wildcats are on the road again next weekend visiting MSU Moorhead Friday at 5:30 p.m. and Minnesota Crookston Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. contest.
