#17 Minnesota State took a 28-7 first quarter lead and never looked back in defeating Wayne State College Friday evening 101-57 in a Northern Sun Conference women's basketball game played at Bresnen Arena in the Taylor Center at Mankato, Minnesota. The host Mavericks improve to 20-4 and 17-1 in the NSIC while WSC falls to 5-15 and 2-15 in league play.
The Mavericks made 11 of 19 shots in the opening stanza while holding WSC to just 2 of 9 shooting to grab a commanding 28-7 lead in the opening quarter.
Minnesota State shot even better in the second quarter, making 14 of 19 shots, to out-shine Wayne State's 5 of 10 shooting in the quarter, as the Mavericks built a 61-21 lead at intermission.
MSU held a 20-13 scoring edge in the third quarter while Wayne State outscored the Mavericks 23-20 in the fourth quarter making 8 of 17 shots from the field as the game ended in a 101-57 victory for Minnesota State.
Junior guard
Delaney Clark led Wayne State with a career-high 17 points off the bench, making 5 of 6 3-point shots and 6 of 9 shots overall.
Wayne State finished the game making 20 of 50 shots for 40 percent. The 'Cats were 5 for 15 behind the arc and 12 of 14 at the charity stripe.
Minnesota State shot 51.3 percent for the game making 40 of 78 shots. The Mavericks were 9 for 22 from the 3-point line and 12 of 16 at the charity stripe.
Destinee Bursch scored a game-high 22 points for MSU with Mackenzie Schweim adding 16. Joey Batt and Natalie Bremer each scored 14 points for the Mavericks.
MSU won the rebounding battle 39-32 and forced 29 Wayne State turnovers, resulting in a 42-17 edge in points off turnovers.
Brigid Boyle handed out a team-high three assists while
Kylah vanDonkersgoed blocked two shots.
