Wayne State jumped out to a 5-0 first inning lead and the Wildcats went on to defeat St. Anselm College of New Hampshire 6-1 Saturday afternoon at the National Training Center Spring Softball Games in Winter Haven, Florida. The Wildcats are now 4-20 on the year with St. Anselm falling to 2-8.
Jordyn Klein opened the game with a walk with
Jordyn Rochholz reaching on an error.
Lillie Timm singled to load the bases and
Haylee Weber had a sacrifice fly to score the first run of the game. A bases loaded walk to Emilee Barth brought home Rochholz for the second run with
Mary Krystofiak drawing a walk to score Timm. A
Hayley Murphy sacrifice fly scored the fourth run while
Lauren Laudick's RBI single accounted for the fifth run of the inning.
The Wildcats added another run in the second inning Rochholz singled and scored on a groundout by
Annika Manzanares for a 6-0 lead.
St. Anslem avoided the shutout in the seventh inning scoring one run to make the final score 6-1.
Wayne State had eight hits in the win to five by St. Anselm. Timm and Weber each went 2 for 3 at the plate for the Wildcats with Timm recording a double. Manzanares, Laudick, Rochholz and Marth each singled.
Junior
Grace Lucka fired five strong innings of relief to record the victory, allowing just one run on three hits. Junior Sami Felt worked the first two innings and allowed two hits and no runs with one strikeout.
Wayne State concludes play in Florida Sunday facing D'Youville University of New York at 9 a.m. and #8 Indianapolis at 11:15 a.m. in Auburndale, Florida.
