#13 Chaminade hands #2 Wildcats setback in Colorado Premier opener

            #13 Chaminade recorded 10 service aces to hand #2 Wayne State its first loss of the season Friday afternoon at the Colorado Premier Volleyball Challenge in Denver, Colorado.  Scores of the match were 25-22, 25-23 and 25-23.  The Silverswords improve to 5-2 while the Wildcats are now 4-1.
            The first set saw the Wildcats trail early 10-4 and again at 18-13.  But WSC battled back and knotted the score at 21-21 following a service ace from senior Brooke Peltz.  But Chaminade got back-to-back kills to keep the lead for good finishing the opening set with a 25-22 win.
            Taya Beller had five kills in the first set to lead the 'Cats followed by Channatee Robles with four and three apiece by Maggie Brahmer and Brooklyn Kusler.
            After trailing 7-4 early in the second set, WSC stormed back and took a 12-9 lead forcing a Chaminade timeout following a Beller kill.  WSC took their biggest lead of the set at 18-14 on a Brahmer kill, but the Silverswords rolled off six straight points to regain the lead 20-18.  A kill from Kusler saw the 'Cats tie the score at 21-21, but three straight points from the Silverswords gave Chaminade a 24-21 lead and the Silverswords closed the set with a 25-23 victory.
            Beller had six kills on eight attacks in the second set for WSC while Brahmer added four kills.   
            The third set saw Wayne State lead a majority of the time, but a late Silversword rally gave Chaminade the sweep with a 25-23 win.
            The 'Cats held several leads of four in the set with the last one coming at 19-15 on a Taya Beller kill.  With WSC still leading 21-18, Chaminade scored the next three points to tie the set at 21.  A pair of attack errors by the Silverswords put the 'Cats in front 23-21, but Chaminade scored the final four points of the set to rally for a 25-23 win and sweep the match.
            Wayne State hit .269 in the match to .208 for Chaminade.  The Silverswords held a 49-40 edge in kills and produced 10 service aces to just two for WSC.  The Wildcats had six blocks to just two for Chaminade.
            Beller had 14 kills to lead Wayne State in hitting followed by Robles with 10 and Brahmer nine.  Peltz and Robles each had eight digs while Beller recorded a team-high four blocks.
            Wayne State plays again Friday evening at the Colorado Premier Challenge battling Wheeling (W. Va.) at 7 p.m. Central Time.
