#11 Wayne State rallied to win the final two sets and post a five-set victory over #10 St. Cloud State in Northern Sun Conference volleyball Saturday evening at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. Scores of the match were 25-20, 34-36, 20-25, 25-19, 15-10. The Wildcats are now tied for first in the NSIC with the Huskies at 8-1 in league play while improving to 15-3 on the season as SCSU drops to 13-4 overall.
The first set saw the Wildcats score seven straight points to snap an early 8-8 tie as WSC went on to post a 25-20 opening set win. The seven-point scoring run was fueled by back-to-back blocks from
Chloe Hanel and
Molly Romano along with a pair of Hanel kills.
Hanel had six kills in the opening set to go with three blocks to lead the 'Cats while
Laney Kathol and
Delaney Miller each added three kills.
The second set was a marathon between the two clubs, exchanging 15 ties and four lead changes before St. Cloud State outlasted the Wildcats 36-34.
WSC trailed in the set 20-13 but rallied to tie the score at 22-22 and had three set points (24-23, 25-24 and 26-25) but could not get the final point to close the set as the Huskies finished with the 36-34 set win.
Hanel and Miller each had six kills in the set for the Wildcats while Hanel had another five blocks in the second set.
SCSU hit a strong .368 in the third set with 18 kills to take a 2-1 set lead with a 25-20 victory. Freshman
Mattie Kamery had four kills and six digs to pace the 'Cats.
The fourth set saw the Wildcats use a 9-2 scoring surge near the midway point of the set, turning an 8-6 deficit into a 15-10 lead, as the 'Cats forced a fifth set with a 25-19 win.
Hanel fueled the scoring surge with two straight blocks and a kill while Borner added a key service ace.
In the fifth set, WSC broke a 7-7 tie and built a 12-8 lead and finished with a 15-10 win in the fifth set to rally for the win.
Channatee Robles had four kills in the deciding fifth set along with a service ace.
WSC hit .273 in the win to St. Cloud State's .221. SCSU held an 83-68 advantage in kills and 108-87 in digs, but WSC forced 34 attack errors on the Huskies that included 14 blocks as the 'Cats held a 14-2 edge in blocks.
Hanel had a rare double-double of 18 kills and tied a school record with 13 blocks, joining
Tarrin Beller in 2018 and Emily Schroeder Jones three times as Wildcat players to post 13 blocks in a single match.
Miller chipped in 17 kills followed by Kamery with 14 kills and 18 digs.
Sophomore libero
Anna Borner had 21 digs while sophomore setter
Molly Romano handed out 54 set assists with 13 digs.
The next game for the Wildcats is Thursday evening when Wayne State travels to Sioux Falls for an NSIC contest against the Cougars starting at 6 p.m.
