Winona State took advantage of three interceptions in the first half to defeat Wayne State football 21-14 in a Northern Sun Conference matchup in Winona, Minnesota this afternoon. Both squads move to 3-3 overall as well as 3-2 in league play.
Wayne State made it all the way down to the Winona State 1-yard line before penalties and loss of yards resulted in a missed field goal after both teams punted away their first possessions.
Winona's first score came in the second quarter off an interception that would set up a 36-yard rush by the WSU quarterback. On the following drive by the 'Cats, WSU would pick off
Brady McGill for the second time and score three plays later to take a 14-0 lead halfway through the second quarter.
The Wildcats had the ball near midfield when a tipped pass would be picked off by the Warriors defense, their third of the quarter. WSC would go into the halftime break trailing 14-0.
Winona would go three and out to start the second half and the Wildcats were able to get back into the redzone but came up empty handed after a missed field goal.
The Wayne State defense forced another three and out by the Warriors and the offense got the ball at their own 46-yard line.
Dawson Forgy would score a two-yard rush to make it a one score contest after the offense marched down 54 yards on 10 plays.
WSU would score their third touchdown with 11:27 left on the clock in the fourth quarter.
The Wildcats and Warriors each punted to each before WSC would start another long drive from their own 20. Wayne State would use 14 plays to go 80 yards and Forgy would punch it in from one yard out for his second touchdown of the game and make it a 21-14 game.
Winona would be forced to punt just ahead of the two-minute warning to give Wayne State a chance to tie it up.
Looking at a fourth and 17, the 'Cats went for it but were just short of the first down marker and would turn it over on downs.
Wayne State would outgain the Warriors in total offense with 381 yards and forced the Warriors into eight punts. Forgy rushed for a total of 188 yards with two scores and had seven receiving yards.
Dane Petersen would lead all receivers with 54 yards.
Jes Krcil totaled six tackles followed by
Kahmel Johnson and
Luke Lambert each with five.
Carter Sitzman had 1.5 sacks for a loss of nine yards.
Wayne State will be at home next Saturday hosting Bemidji State in the Hall of Fame Game with kickoff set for 1 p.m. at Bob Cunningham Field in Wayne.
