Concordia-St. Paul outscored Wayne State 17-4 in the second quarter, then withstood a Wildcat rally in the second half, to defeat Wayne State 69-59 in a Northern Sun Conference South Division women's basketball game Thursday evening at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. The Wildcats drop to 6-6 and 1-5 in the league while Concordia-St. Paul is 6-5 and 2-4 in league play.
The visiting Golden Bears started quickly with an 8-2 lead, but WSC countered with nine straight points and took an 11-8 lead following five straight points from
Kylah vanDonkersgoed along with baskets from
Lily Fitzgerald and
Tenleigh Smith.
WSC would end the opening quarter with a 15-14 lead.
But the 'Cats went cold from the field in the second quarter, scoring just four points, as Concordia-St. Paul held WSC to just 2 of 11 shooting, and the Golden Bears built a 31-19 lead at intermission.
Wayne State was able to bounce back in the third quarter with better shooting, going 8 of 16 from the field.
After trailing by 14 points early in the third quarter, WSC reduced the deficit to five at the end of the third quarter following an
Addy Johnson 3-pointer making the score 47-42.
The Golden Bears pushed the lead back to double figures early in the fourth quarter, leading 58-45 with 4:45 remaining.
The Wildcats made one last charge at CSP, getting as close as six at 58-52 thanks to a pair of
Tenleigh Smith free throws with 3:14 to play.
But CSP scored the next five points to move the lead back to 11 and the Golden Bears closed with the 69-59 victory.
Kelsey Willems was the lone Wayne State player in double figures with 14 points.
WSC made 20 of 56 shots for 35.7 percent, going 7 of 24 behind the arc and 12 for 16 at the foul stripe.
Ashley Schuelke scored 21 points for Concordia-St. Paul, one of four players in double figures. Lauren Wilson added 16, Lauren Feddema scored 15 and Lydia Haack had 10.
Concordia-St. Paul shot 41 percent making 23 of 56 shots. The Bears were 6 of 18 from 3-point range and 17 of 26 at the foul stripe.
CSP held a 39-34 advantage on the boards with
Meg Rietz hauling in 12 caroms for the Wildcats.
Tenleigh Smith handed out eight assists while
Emma Frost recorded two blocked shots for WSC.
Wayne State is home again Saturday afternoon when Winona State visits Rice Auditorium for an NSIC South Division game starting at 3 p.m.
