Matt Noll sank the second of two free throws with six seconds remaining to give Wayne State a 65-64 win over Winona State in Northern Sun Conference South Division basketball Saturday afternoon at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. The Wildcats completed the weekend sweep at home and improve to 7-6 and 3-4 in the NSIC while Winona State drops to 3-9 and 2-5 in league play.
An early 7-2 deficit for Wayne State turned into a 15-11 lead at the 11:04 mark of the first half on a
Andrew Stokes offensive rebounds and layup. It was Wayne State's biggest lead of the game.
Winona State scored 10 of the next 12 points and took a 21-17 lead with 6:36 to play in the half.
The Wildcats used a
JJ Ferrin layup and a three-point play from Noll to take their final lead of the opening half at 22-21 with 5:09 to go in the half.
Tied at 24-24 with 3:16 to play in the half, Winona State closed the opening half strong and grabbed a 32-27 lead at intermission.
Wayne State started the second half with a 10-2 run and grabbed a 37-34 lead on a 3-pointer from Ferrin four minutes into the second half.
Four mintues later, WSC still held a four-point lead at 47-43 until Winona State used a 17-4 run over the next five minutes to grab their biggest lead of the game at 60-51 with 6:00 remaining.
The Wildcats responded with an 8-2 run and cut the deficit to 62-59.
A
Darshan Thomas 3-pointer tied the game at 62-62 and an
Eldon Turner layup gave the 'Cats a 64-62 lead.
The next possession Winona State sank a pair of free throws and tied the score at 64-64 with 2:33 to play.
Both teams missed their next three shots and Noll was fouled with six seconds to play for a chance to win the game.
After missing the first charity toss, Noll sank the second for the final margin and a 65-64 Wildcat victory.
Noll scored a game-high 17 points to lead Wayne State. Ferrin and
Aurrion Harris also hit double figures with 11 points apiece.
Wayne State made 25 of 55 shots for 45.5 percent. The 'Cats were 6 for 19 from 3-point range and 9 of 12 at the free throw line.
Alessandro Tonelli led Winona State in scoring with 14 points. Tyler Borowski chipped in 13 and Tyler Mason scored 10.
Winona State shot 46.9 percent from the field making 23 of 49 including 7 of 22 behind the arc. The Warriors were 11 for 12 at the free throw line.
WSC held a sizeable 36-20 edge in rebounding thanks to 15 offensive boards. Thomas grabbed nine boards for the 'Cats with Harris adding seven.
Thomas had three assists while Turner and Harris each accounted for two steals.
Wayne State resumes play on Saturday, January 3rd when the Wildcats visit Augustana at 1:30 p.m.
