Wayne State Colleges men's basketball team is back in the win column after the Wildcats picked up a road win at Augustana University.
Cody McCullough led the team with his fourth double-double of the season. After only scoring 20 points in the first half, WSC was able to shoot 54.5% in the second half to secure the win. 'Cats improve to 14-8 overall and 8-8 in the NSIC while the Vikings drop to 10-12 overall and 7-9 in conference.
Wayne State jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the opening four minutes of play. Augustana responded and knotted the score up at 8-8 with 13 minutes remaining in the opening half. Both teams would go scoreless for the next six minutes of play.
The Wildcats found themselves trailing after an Augie three-point bucket, but a technical foul was assessed to AU, giving WSC some free throws and gave Wayne back the lead after a
Jay Saunders layup.
WSC would hang onto a 1-point lead, 20-19, as the team exited for the half time break. Wayne State shot a cold 29% from the field, but Augustana shot a 24% in the opening half. Saunders led the offense with eight points with
Cody McCullough right behind him with six points and nine rebounds.
The two teams traded buckets to begin the second half, with Wayne State staying in front. McCullough and Saunders scored the first seven points for the 'Cats as they built their lead out to four heading into a timeout at the 14-minute mark.
A pair of triples from
JJ Ferrin and
Kai Smith gave Wayne their biggest lead of the contest, 26-34. The Vikings ripped off a 9-0 run to take the lead by one point at the nine-minute mark.
Wildcats responded and regained a five-point lead after another triple from Ferrin and a pair of free throws from McCullough.
With less than a minute left on the scoreboard, Augie looked to foul and sent Ferrin to the line in single bonus. The two free throws built the lead to seven with 27 seconds left in the game.
A late Augie triple cut the 'Cats lead to four but
Sean Stokes scored an easy layup and this would put the exclamation mark on the contest, giving WSC the six-point road win.
Wayne State shot a hot 54% in the second half. WSC out rebounded AU 35-25 with McCullough pulling down 13 of them. McCullough led Wayne State with 16 points and Saunders trailed with 12 points.
Wayne State will be back in action Thursday, February 6
th on the road taking on the Minnesota State Mavericks.
