The Wayne State College men's basketball team dropped one on the road at Minnesota State University as they took on the Mavericks, 83-53. Wayne State was led in scoring by sophomore
JJ Ferrin with 18 points. Ferrin connected on six three pointers, tying his career high in three-point field goals made. The 'Cats drop to 8-9 in NSIC play and 14-9 overall while the Mavericks improve to 11-5 in conference and 15-9 overall.
The two teams traded three pointers,
JJ Ferrin making a pair of them to make it 6-9 Mavericks in the first two minutes of play. MSU would extend their lead to 11 after their fourth triple in the first half. WSC trailed 29-15 with seven minutes left of the clock, Ferrin swished his third three-pointer of the night. His fourth three would come a few minutes later to make it 35-21 in favor of the Mavericks.
Sean Stokes splashed his first bucker from the right corner in front of the MSU bench to give the 'Cats their 24
th point. MSU would hold WSC scoreless for the last three minutes after the Stokes triple. Ferrin would lead the WSC offense at the break with his 12 points.
Ferrin opened the second half with a three ball. MSU would score eight points before senior
Noah Erickson made a corner three-pointer to make it 58-32 in favor of Minnesota State.
Kai Smith subbed in and made his first triple of the evening, the eighth for the Wildcats at 11:27 mark. Erickson went up and under on a drive for the first two-point score of the half to make it a 23-point deficit before a media timeout.
Smith would score a pair of buckets on back-to-back possessions including a dunk for his ninth point of the night. The Wildcats would score their last bucket from a Landen Classen jumper to finish with 53 points to MSU's 83.
The Wildcats connected in nine triples, six from Ferrin. Ferrin scored the team high 18 points and Smith was second in scoring with nine.
Cody McCullough led the team with six rebounds and two steals.
Jay Saunders put out six assists and pulled down four boards.
Wildcats will be back in action in Wayne America this Saturday as they host Concordia-St. Paul.
