St. Cloud State sank a 3-pointer with just over three seconds to play giving the visiting Huskies a 55-52 win over Wayne State Friday evening in Northern Sun Conference women's basketball played in Rice Auditorium. WSC drops to 10-14 and 7-13 in NSIC play while St. Cloud State is now 12-12 and 9-10 in the league.
Both teams struggled shooting the ball in the first quarter with WSC holding a 10-8 lead after one quarter. The "Cats made just 3 of 11 shots while SCSU was 3 for 12.
The second quarter featured scoring runs by both teams. St. Cloud State built a five-point lead at 17-12 with 7:00 to play in the first half. WSC then scored the next 10 points, holding the Huskies scoreless for the next 3:18, as the 'Cats took a five-point lead at 22-17.
Wayne State closed the first half with a 24-21 lead.
The third quarter saw neither team lead by more than three points as the two teams exchanged five ties and five lead changes as St. Cloud State ended with a 39-38 lead.
The visiting Huskies held the lead for nearly the entire fourth quarter with the exception of two ties.
A pair of
Tate Norblade free throws with 4:26 to play knotted the score at 45-45.
After St. Cloud State scored six straight points for a 51-45 advantage, WSC battled back one more time. Baskets by Norblade,
Kylah vanDonkersgoed and a free throw by
Meg Rietz followed by a layup from Norblade with 17 seconds to play to tie the score at 52-52.
On the next possession, St. Cloud State sank a 3-pointer from the top of the key with just over three seconds to play giving the Huskies a 55-52 lead.
Wayne State tried to get off a shot to tie the game late by vanDonkersgoed was short from the left side and the Huskies escaped with the 55-52 win.
Senior
Maya Fitzpatrick scored 16 points to lead Wayne State followed by Norblade with 10.
Wayne State was 18 of 47 from the field for 38.3 percent. The Wildcats were 0 for 14 from the 3-point line, snapping a streak of 347 straight games with at least one made 3-pointer dating back to January 4, 2013 vs. Concordia-St. Paul (0-7). WSC was 16 for 21 at the free throw stripe.
Rachel Kottke had 17 points for St. Cloud State, including the game-winning 3-pointer. Jada Eggebrecht scored 11 with Alana Zarneke adding 10.
SCSU made 21 of 53 shots for 39.6 percent, including 5 for 18 from the 3-point line. The Huskies were 8 for 14 at the line.
St. Cloud State held a commanding 42-24 advantage in rebounds over WSC as Fitzpatrick hauled in eight boards for the Wildcats.
Carsyn Boswell handed out three assists while Fitzpatrick had four steals.
The 'Cats play their final home game of the season Saturday at 5:30 p.m. hosting Bemidji State on Senior Night in Rice Auditorium.
