An eight run fourth inning in the opener and a seven-run fourth frame in the second contest propelled Wayne State in a NSIC baseball doubleheader sweep Thursday afternoon by scores of 9-5 and 12-0. WSC is now 7-8 and 3-3 in the league while the Beavers drop to 1-11 and 0-6 in league play.
In the opener, WSC was trailing 3-1 entering the bottom of the fourth until erupting for eight runs to take control of the game. Big hits in the inning came from
Cam Madsen on a two-run single, a two-run single from
Max Heard followed by a two-run double by
Taylor Gill.
The Wildcats only had six hits in the opener, but made the most of six walks from Bemidji State pitching while also recording four stolen bases.
Madsen was 2 for 4 with a double, two RBI, two stolen bases and two runs scored to lead Wayne State at the plate. Gill added a two-run double while Heard recorded a two-run single.
Quinn McCafferty and
Braden Cannon also singled in the first game.
Senior
Jackson Shelburne worked 4 2/3 innings to notch the win, now 2-2 on the season. He struck out seven batters allowing four hits and three runs. Reliever
Conlin Grady pitched the final 2 1/3 innings and fanned five batters without giving up a hit but was charged with two runs, both unearned.
The second game saw senior starter
Josh Kilzer fire six innings of two-hit ball while WSC pounded out 15 hits in a 12-0 seven-inning win to cap the sweep.
McCafferty delivered a two-run single for 2-0 lead in the first.
The 'Cats added three runs in the third as Heard and Cannon each produced RBI singles while the third run of the frame came on a sacrifice fly by
Kaden Young.
WSC put the game out of reach in the fourth with seven runs.
Kaden Young had a bases-loaded clearing double. Senior catcher
Tyler Obrecht added an RBI double with Gill and Madsen each contributing run-scoring singles.
Wayne State had 15 hits in the win while holding Bemidji State to two.
Casey Prychak had a pair of doubles and one run scored. Madsen and Douglas were both 2 for 3 with two runs scored with Douglas recording a double. Gill finished 2 for 4 with two runs scored while Young had a team-high four RBI in the win.
Kilzer, 1-0 on the season, was impressive on the mound allowing just two hits over six innings with four strikeouts and no walks.
Braden Sweet worked a perfect seventh inning to preserve the shutout.
WSC and Bemidji State close out their four-game NSIC series Friday with another doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
