Big First Game Gives Wildcats Split with Minot State in Weekend Series

            Wayne State finished their series with Minot State this afternoon going 1-1, winning game one 22-6 and dropping game two 7-5. Josh Kilzer started on the bump in game one and would strikeout four batters. Cam Madsen went 4-6 with two runs and three RBI's with Connor Hunt adding in three hits with three runs scored and four RBI's. In game two Max Heard led with two hits and three runs while Taylor Gill recorded a hit with two RBIs. Madsen finished the day with five hits, three runs, and four RBI's.
Wayne State scored in all but the first inning in their dominant win of MSU, 22-6. Josh Kilzer earned the win after pitching five innings and striking out four batters.
            Minot struck first with a single run in the first inning on a ground out RBI and Wayne State would go down in order to end the first inning.
            Kilzer would put down the side for the Beavers, catching the third batter looking for the third strike. A wild pitch and a Casey Prychak single would put two runs on for the 'Cats.
            WSC would take advantage of four walks and an error to go along with their three hits in the third to score seven runs and take a demanding 9-1 lead. Kilzer and the Wildcat fielders would once again put the Beavers down in order in the fourth inning.
            The fourth inning WSC took off with six runs on six hits. Prychak connected with his second hit of the game to earn his second RBI of the game. Max Heard recorded the sixth hit with a home run to right field that scored three runs.
            MSU looked to cut the deficit with four runs in the top of the fifth before Kilzer recorded the last out with a ball down the middle, holding on a 15-5 lead.
            WSC tacked on two runs in the bottom of the fifth but left two runners stranded on the bags. Keagan McLaughlin and Cam Madsen earned the two RBI's in the inning.
            Minot State scored their final run in the top of the sixth on a solo home run to right field.
            Wayne State kept the hammer down, as the 'Cats added five more runs to the scoreboard. A Ethan Nguyen homer to lead off the inning set the tone. Connor Hunt singled right up the middle nd earned two RBI's as Braden Chaney and Blake Stanley trotted home. WSC scored their final two runs on two singles.
            ;Cats defense gave up one hit in the final inning of play and recorded a double play and a fly out to close out the third game of the weekend series, as WSC defeated MSU 22-6.
            Hunt went 3-3 with three runs and four RBI's to lead Wayne. Chase Douglas and Madsen combined four six hits and six RBI's as well. Carson Obrecht came in to pitch the final two innings and gave up three hits and one run.
            In game two, Wayne State scored the first run after Tyson Romero struck out Minot's top hitter. Taylor Gill singled to center on a first pitch and Max Heard scored.
            MSU responded with two run on a sacrifice bunt and single. Madsen followed up with a single and Kaden Young scored the tying run to make it 2-2.
            WSC took back the lead in the third on a sacrifice fly after Heard doubled to center to lead off the inning.
            The Beavers took back a one run lead after their lead off batter singled down the left field line and two runners scored. Minot would stretch their lead out to four runs, 7-3, with two runs on one hit and one error from the Wildcats.
            In the same inning, the 'Cats scored two runs to cut it back to a two-run ball game. With bases juiced, Gill reached on a fielders choice and earned and RBI. Heard scored the second run after Quinn McCafferty grounded out.
            With Kadyn Van Hill now on the mound for the Wildcats, he would put down the Beavers in order in the seventh but WSC would leave two of their own stranded to close out the inning.
            In the final inning and after Braden Cannon put down the side in the top of the ninth, the Wildcats had the tying run at the plate. Hunt would reach on a fielders choice with two outs and Chaney would be out at second.
            MSU takes the final game of the series 7-5. Wayne State would move to 11-10 overall and 7-5 in conference play. Heard would lead Wayne in batting, going 2-4 with three runs to his name. Gill led with two RBI's. Romero, Van Hill, and Cannon all had two strikeouts.
            The Wildcats are scheduled to play a four-game NSIC series at UMary in Bismarck, North Dakota next weekend starting with a nine-inning game Friday at 1:30 p.m. followed by a Saturday doubleheader and nine-inning game next Sunday (March 30) to close out the series.
