Game Recap: Baseball |

Sweep gets Wildcats series win at UMary

Jackson Shelburne and Braden Cannon held UMary to just one run in the opener while seven different Wildcat pitchers held the Marauders to just three runs in the second game as the Wildcats recorded a sweep over the University of Mary 2-1 and 7-3 Friday afternoon in Bismarck, North Dakota to take three of four games in the NSIC baseball series.  WSC is now 14-11 and 10-6 in conference play while UMary is 12-13 and 8-8 in NSIC games.
The opener saw Wayne State's two runs in the first inning hold up as Shelburne and Cannon combined on a six-hitter giving the 'Cats a 2-1 win.
In the first, Chase Douglas singled and crossed home plate on a Taylor Gill single for the first run while Gill scored on the next at bat thanks to an RBI double from Quinn McCafferty for a 2-0 lead.
The score stayed 2-0 until the bottom of the fourth when UMary got a solo homer for their lone run of the game.
The Marauders had runners reach second base in the sixth and seventh innings but Shelburne and Cannon closed the door on UMary's rally attempts for the 2-1 win.
Both teams had six hits in the game.  Douglas was 2 for 3 with a stolen base and run scored.  McCafferty had the lone extra base hit for WSC, a double, and one RBI.
Shelburne moved to 4-2 on the season with six strong innings for the win, allowing just six hits and one run with three strikeouts.  Cannon worked the seventh inning for his fourth save of the year, giving up one walk with one strikeout.
The second game saw the Wildcats rally with three runs in the seventh and eighth innings to complete the sweep for a 7-3 win.
UMary held a 2-0 lead entering the top of the third when Casey Prychak had a leadoff double and later scored on a Douglas RBI double down the right field line.
The Marauders scored another run in the bottom of the third and held a 3-1 lead until the seventh when WSC scored three runs without a hit.  Four walks, a hit batter, balk and several wild pitches got the 'Cats three runs and a 4-3 lead.
Three insurance runs in the eighth gave WSC a 7-3 advantage.  Max Heard opened the frame with a leadoff homer to right field.  Catcher Keagan McLaughlin came through with an RBI single scoring Gill (walk) and Madsen drew a bases loaded walk to bring home Cannon (walk) for the final run of the game.
UMary had one more hit than WSC, 9-8, but the 'Cats made the most of nine walks, four hit batters and four wild pitches to score seven runs.
Prychak went 2 for 2 with a double and run scored.  Heard added two hits including a homer and double with one RBI.
Seven pitchers worked the game for WSC.  Kadyn Van Hill (2-0), the fifth of seven pitchers, fired one inning of relief to earn the win.  Lefthander Adam Eggert worked two scoreless innings while Clay Beaumont threw a team-high 2 1/3 innings.
The Wildcats return home next weekend hosting Minnesota Duluth in a four-game NSIC series starting with a nine-inning contest Friday at 1:30 p.m. followed by a Saturday doubleheader at noon and another nine inning game Sunday at 12 p.m.
