Box Score The Wayne State baseball team opened their Florida spring break trip Saturday afternoon with a 14-0 setback at Embry-Riddle University in Daytona Beach, Florida. The host Eagles move to 11-6 with the win while the Wildcats drop to 2-7.
The host Eagles scored once in the first inning and three more in the second for a 4-0 advantage.
Two more runs in the fourth gave Embry-Riddle a 6-0 lead with the host team putting the game out of reach in the sixth inning scoring eight runs on just five hits while taking advantage of three hit batters and two walks from Wildcat pitching to grab a 14-0 lead.
Wayne State had several scoring chances but each time could not get an extra base hit to score runs and keep the inning alive.
In the sixth,
Cam Madsen walked and moved to third on a double by
Max Heard with two outs but both were left stranded in scoring position.
The 'Cats loaded the bases in the eighth but could not score again as Madsen was hit by a pitch,
Chase Douglas walked and
Connor Hunt was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Embry-Riddle held a 13-5 advantage in hits on Wayne State.
Max Heard and
Kaden Young each went 2 for 4 with a double while
Casey Prychak also doubled.
Starter
Jackson Shelburne (1-2) suffered the pitching loss, working 3 2/3 innings. He allowed six runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Four other Wildcats saw action from the bullpen as lefthander
Brooks Kneifl fired 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief and lefthander
Adam Eggert fired a perfect eighth inning of relief with two strikeouts.
Braden Sweet and
Kyler Hanson also worked in relief for the 'Cats.
The Wildcats play two games Sunday at the RussMatt Invitational in Davenport, Florida, battling Gannon (Pa.) at 8 a.m. and Point Park (Pa.) at 11:15 a.m.
