Wayne State celebrated Senior Day Friday afternoon with a sweep over Winona State in Northern Sun Conference baseball at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex in Wayne by scores of 8-0 and 8-4. The Wildcats are now 28-20 on the season and 24-15 in the NSIC while the visiting Warriors drop to 22-27 and 18-21 in conference play.
The opener saw seniors
Clay Beaumont and
Josh Kilzer combine on a two-hit shutout as the "Cats blanked the Warriors 8-0.
WSC scored one run in the first on a
Max Heard RBI single that drove home
Chase Douglas, who doubled.
The 'Cats added three more runs in the second to grab a 4-0 advantage.
Braden Cannon's RBI bunt single scored
Brayden Chaney (single) with the first run.
Kaden Young singled and later scored on a wild pitch while Cannon crossed home plate on an RBI groundout from
Cam Madsen for the third run.
In the fifth, WSC took a 5-0 lead when Douglas singled and scored on a Heard double to right center.
WSC added three more runs in the sixth to close the scoring in the 8-0 win. Cannon doubled and scored on a single up the middle by Douglas while
Taylor Gill had an RBI single to score Madsen (hit by pitch) for the other big hit in the inning.
Wayne State held a 12-2 edge in hits over Winona State in the win. Douglas was 3 for 4 with a double and two runs scored. Heard went 2 for 4 with a double and two RBI, Cannon was 2 for 2 with a double and two runs scored while Gill added two singles.
Starter
Clay Beaumont (4-1) earned the win, allowing just one hit over four innings with one strikeout. Kilzer worked the final three innings to notch the save, yielding just one hit with four strikeouts.
The second game saw the Wildcats take control of the contest with back-to-back three-run innings in the fifth and sixth frames to complete the sweep with an 8-4 win.
Prychak opened the scoring in the third on a solo homer to right center field.
WSC took a 4-0 lead in the fifth scoring three times, capitalizing on two Winona State errors. Madsen singled while Douglas had an RBI single for WSC hits in the inning.
Winona State got on the scoreboard in the sixth to make it a 4-1 game, but WSC came back with three more runs to grab a 7-1 lead. Young belted a two-run homer to score Chaney (walked) for the first two runs while Douglas added an RBI single for the third run bringing home pinch runner
Connor Hunt.
The 'Cats scored their final run of the game in the seventh thanks to Chaney reaching on a walk and later scoring on a wild pitch.
Winona State closed the scoring with one run in the eighth and two in the ninth for the 8-4 final score.
WSC had 13 hits in the win, led by Douglas and Gannon with three hits each. Cannon was 3 for 3 on three singles while Doulgas doubled and had two RBI. Prychak went 2 for 2 with a homer, Madsen had two singles and Young had a two-run homer.
Starter
Jackson Shelburne earned the win, now 5-3 on the season. He fired five scoreless innings allowing just three hits with four strikeouts. Senior reliever
Jacob Kneifl worked the next 1 1/3 innings and became the all-time appearance leader for Wayne State pitchers with his 66
th game on the mound, breaking the previous record of 65 appearances held by Nick Schumacher from 2004-08.
Keinan Lentell and
Conlin Grady finished the game in relief for the Wildcats.
