The Wayne State women's soccer team took advantage of a late first half goal from senior forward
Abby Evers to defeat the Bemidji State Beavers this afternoon 1-0. Goalkeeper
Alexa Hofstetter notched her fifth shutout of the season with 11 saves, nine in the second half alone. The 'Cats improve to 4-0-3 overall and 3-0-1 in conference play. and the Beavers move to 4-2-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the NSIC.
The first half was a tight game between both squads, with each only having five shots in the first 45 minutes of play.
Late in the first half with five minutes remaining, the Wildcats moved the ball all the way down the field with quick passing.
Rachel Davis had the ball in BSU territory and found
Abby Evers near the right corner of the penalty box all alone. Davis sent the pass, and Evers would send the ball into the top left corner of the net.
BSU would come out aggressive in the second half and outpace WSC 15-1 on shots and use to corner kicks to set up opportunities to score, but the Wildcat back line would hold strong.
Alexa Hofstetter would have nine saves in the second half and 11 in the game.
Wayne State would hold off the BSU attack in the second half, stopping any attempt by the Beavers to tie up the match.
Alaina Sorensen and
Morgan Mancuso led the 'Cats in shots with two each and
Reagan Allen and Evers each had one. Hofstetter's 11 saves is her second best on the season.
The Wildcats are at home again next weekend hosting Concordia-St. Paul Friday at 3 p.m. and Winona State Sunday in a 1 p.m. contest.
