Minot State would use a big third quarter to comeback and beat the Wildcats in Saturday afternoon's NSIC matchup, 68-61. Wayne State drops to 9-11 overall and 4-10 in the league while the Beavers move up to 9-12 and 6-8.
Wayne State would build a one-point lead at the end of the first quarter led by senior
Rachel Dahlen and freshman
Sammie Allen with five points apiece. The Wildcats would shoot a cool 58% in the opening quarter and converted 5-6 free throws to end the period, leading 19-18.
The 'Cats would extend their lead out to three points, 31-28. WSC would control the rebounds in the first half with 20 to 16 over the Beavers.
The Beavers would come out of the halftime break and take a quick two-point lead before
Tenleigh Smith tied it up at 33-33 with a fast break layup. Minot would build their lead out to six points after two triples.
Kylah vanDonkersgoed sank a pair of free throws to be the final points for the 'Cats with two minutes remaining in the third quarter. MSU converted a pair of free throws of their own to close the third quarter up at six, 45-39.
Minot State controlled the final quarter of play, extending their lead to as many as 10 points with less than a minute remaining in the game. Back-to-back buckets from Smith and Addy Johson would cut the Beaver lead to six in the fleeting second of the game before the 'Cats would have to foul and Minot was able to put the game away, defeating the Wildcats 68-61.
Dahlen lead the Wildcats in scoring, as she poured in 11 points and vanDonkersgoed contributed a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. WSC held the rebounding advantage, 40-28 over the Beavers.
WSC is at home next weekend when the 'Cats host Minnesota Duluth Friday at 5:30 p.m. and Bemidji State Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in Rice Auditorium.
