Game Recap: Baseball |

WSC gains series split with 13-4 win over St. Cloud State

Wayne State scored nine runs in the seventh and eighth innings to break open a close game while five Wildcat players recorded multi-hit games giving Wayne State a 13-4 win over St. Cloud State Sunday afternoon in Joplin, Missouri and a split of the four-game series.  WSC is now 6-5 on the season with SCSU sitting at 3-4.
The 'Cats opened the scoring in the first when Cam Madsen walked and later scored on a Max Heard sacrifice fly for a 1-0 WSC lead.
WSC added two runs in the top of the fourth for a 3-0 lead thanks to run-scoring singles from Braden Cannon and Easton Leahy.
After St. Cloud State got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run homer cutting the Wildcat advantage to 3-2, WSC scored a single run in the sixth for a 4-2 lead as Nate Cunningham tripled and touched home plate on a single to left field by Paul Schuyler.
The 'Cats produced four runs in the seventh on four hits for an 8-2 cushion.  Gabe Monosmith had a two-run inside-the-park homer scoring Madsen (walk) with the first two runs.  Cannon later followed with a two-run single that drove home Cunningham and Schuyler, who both singled earlier in the frame.
The Huskies came up with two runs in the bottom of the seventh, reducing the Wildcat lead to 8-4.
But WSC put the game out of reach with a five-run eighth on just three hits, taking advantage of three walks, a hit batter and SCSU error in the inning.  Heard had a two-run double to center field for one of the key hits in the inning along with an RBI single from Leahy.
Wayne State ended the game with 13 hits.  Madsen was 2 for 4 with a pair of walks and three runs scored.  Cunningham had two hits with a triple and three runs scored while Schuyler was 2 for 4 with two runs scored.  Cannon finished 2 for 3 with a pair of singles and three RBI while Leahy also had two singles.  Monosmith homered and Heard doubled for other Wildcat extra base hits.
Junior lefthander Braden Sweet (1-1) picked up the pitching win, allowing two runs on five hits over five innings of work with three strikeouts and four walks.  Freshman Drew Lieser pitched the next 1 1/3 innings, charged with two runs on two hits.  Conlin Grady worked 2/3 innings while Kadyn Van Hill and Keegan Hansen each fired one inning of scoreless relief.
The Wildcats are scheduled to host Minnesota Duluth in a four-game series starting Friday, February 27th at a location to be announced pending weather.
