Slow start hurts 'Cats in loss at Winona State

            Winona State raced out to a 27-7 first quarter lead and never looked back in topping Wayne State 79-57 Thursday evening in Northern Sun Conference South Division women's basketball played Thursday evening at McCown Gymnasium in Winona, Minnesota.  The host Warriors improve to 14-9 and 11-6 in the league while WSC drops to 10-13 and 5-12 in NSIC play.
            The host Warriors sank five 3-pointers to open the game on their way to making 10 of 18 shots in the first quarter to build a 27-7 first quarter advantage.  WSC, meanwhile, mustered just 3 of 17 shooting to open the contest.
            Both teams shot exceptionally well in the second quarter as WSC made 9 of 13 shots for 69 percent but the host Warriors were even hotter making 9 of 11 for 81 percent as Winona State took a 53-27 lead at intermission.  Six different Wildcats scored in the quarter led by senior forward Rachel Dahlen had five points with Tenleigh Smith and sophomore reserve guard Emma Frost each adding four points.
            Wayne State outscored the Warriors 18-14 in the third quarter thanks to nine points from Frost on 4 of 6 shooting as Winona State held a 67-45 lead entering the fourth quarter.
            Both teams scored 12 points in the final quarter as each team played a number of reserves as Winona State closed with a 79-57 victory.
            Frost was the lone Wildcat player in double figures matching her career high with 17 points.  She was 7 of 11 shooting and also grabbed a team-high six rebounds.  Dahlen and Kelsey Willems each scored nine points.
            Wayne State shot 23 of 60 from the field for 38.3 percent, going 6 for 27 from the 3-point line and 5 of 7 at the charity stripe.
            Hailey Markworth and Megan Schuman each scored 21 points for Winona State.  Vivica Bretton also reached double figures with 12 points.
            Winona State shot 54.5 percent from the floor on 30 of 55.  The Warriors were 9 of 22 behind the arc and 10-14 at the stripe.
            WSU held a commanding 42-22 advantage on the boards.    
            The Wildcats are in action again Saturday afternoon visiting Concordia-St. Paul in an NSIC South Division contest starting at 1 p.m.
