Kennadi Borngrebe fired a two-hit shutout in the second game to help Wayne State softball split with MSU Moorhead Sunday afternoon at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex. After the visiting Dragons won the opener 4-3, Borngrebe's pitching gem lifted the Wildcats to a 5-0 win in the second contest. WSC is now 26-6 on the season and 6-2 in the league while MSUM is 3-28 and 1-7 in the NSIC.
The opener saw MSU Moorhead build a 3-0 lead with the Dragons holding off a Wildcat rally for a 4-3 win.
The Dragons jumped out with two runs in the first and one more in the second for a 3-0 advantage.
The 'Cats scored single runs in the second and third innings to cut the deficit to 3-2. In the second
Taylor Coleman connected for a solo homer to right field for the first run while
Emilee Marth had an RBI double to left field in the third inning scoring
Leah Chance with the second run.
MSU Moorhead scored again in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead. The 'Cats scored their final run in the sixth as
Reagan Dreibelbis had an RBI double to bring home pinch-runner
Jordan Brustuen. WSC left the tying run on at third base on a ground out to end the inning and could not produce the tying run in the seventh to fall 4-3.
Dreibelbis was 3 for 3 with a double and RBI to lead Wayne State's seven-hit attack. Coleman added a solo homer while Marth doubled and had an RBI for the other extra base hits.
Coleman, the first of three WSC pitchers, was tagged with the loss in the circle and is now 8-2 on the year. She allowed three runs on four hits with three walks and four strikeouts.
The second game saw Borngrebe fire a complete-game two-hit shutout while also going 2 for 3 at the plate in helping the 'Cats rally and earn a split with a 5-0 win.
WSC scored all five runs in the first two innings. In the first, the 'Cats took advantage of two MSUM errors and one walk.
Maddie Scobee and Dreibelbis had sacrifice flies to produce two runs in the first.
In the second, Chance laced an RBI double down the left field line scoring
Haylee Weber (single) while Marth later came through with a two-run single that scored
Jordyn Klein (single) and Chance.
That was all the run support needed for Borngrebe, who moved to 10-3 on the season with her ninth complete game and fourth shutout of the season. She fanned six and walked just three in the win.
WSC had six hits in the game with Borngrebe going 2 for 3 with a pair of singles. Chance had the only extra base hit of the contest with a double while scoring twice.
The Wildcats are home again next weekend hosting St. Cloud State Friday at 12 p.m. and Concordia-St. Paul Saturday in a 12 p.m. doubleheader.
