Wildcats drop pair at #17 Augustana

The Wayne State College baseball team saw their 11-game win streak come to an end Tuesday afternoon at #17 Augustana as the Vikings swept a Northern Sun Conference baseball doubleheader by scores of 9-5 and 8-4.  WSC is now 19-11 on the season and 11-6 in the league while the host Vikings improve to 23-6 and 16-1 in the league.
The opener saw the host Vikings produce four home runs and seven extra-base hits to take down the Wildcats 9-5.
WSC scored first when Cam Madsen doubled to open the game and later scored on a Augustana throwing error.
The 'Cats added two runs in the second when Braden Cannon singled and Easton Mains later delivered a two-out, two-run homer over the left field fence and the score was tied 3-3 after two innings.
Augustana broke the game open with a five-run fourth inning to grab an 8-3 lead.
Wayne State scored twice in the sixth to cut the deficit to 8-5 as Nate Cunningham walked and Paul Schuyler was hit by a pitch.  On a double steal, Cunningham scored on a throwing error to third while Schuyler later scored on a sacrifice fly from Cannon.
The Vikings closed the scoring with a run in the bottom of the sixth for the 9-5 final.
WSC had seven hits in the game.  Madsen finished 2 for 3 with a double and run scored.  Mains added a two-run homer for the other Wildcat extra base hit.  Cannon, Cunningham, Casey Prychak and Gabe Monosmith each singled.
Starting pitcher Carson Obrecht (0-3) was tagged with the pitching loss in 3 2/3 innings.  Reliever Conlin Grady worked two innings allowing one run on one hit with Keegan Hansen getting the final out of the contest.
The second game saw Augustana produce six extra base hits in completing a sweep with an 8-4 win.
The Vikings opened the game scoring three runs in the first to take the early advantage.
WSC scored their first run of the game in the fifth to cut the margin to 3-1 as Bradon Cannon connected for a two-out solo homer over the left field wall.
Augustana answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-1 lead, but WSC responded with a three-run sixth to cut the Viking lead to 5-4 thanks to a two-out rally.  Max Heard was hit by the pitch and Monosmith walked followed by a three-run homer from Cunningham, his 10th of the season.
The Vikings put the game out of reach with three runs in the seventh to make the final score 8-4.
