Game Recap: Baseball |

WSC opens North Carolina trip with extra inning 9-8 win over St. Anselm (NH)

Redshirt sophomore Brooks Kneifl fired three innings of scoreless relief and delivered a walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning to help Wayne State edge St. Anselm College of New Hampshire 9-8 Friday afternoon in Cary, North Carolina at the USA Baseball Complex.  The Wildcats are now 8-8 on the season with the Hawks sitting at 1-4 following the loss.
It appeared Wayne State had control of the contest after four innings building a 5-0 advantage.  But St. Anselm erupted for a seven-run fifth and the Wildcats found themselves trailing until tying the score in the seventh and winning the game in the bottom of the 10th.
WSC scored single runs in the first and second and produced three runs in the fourth for an early 5-0 lead.  In the first, Gabe Monosmith had an RBI single to bring home Paul Schuyler (doubled) while in the second Brayden Chaney walked with two outs, stole second and third base and scored on a St. Anselm throwing error.
In the fourth, senior catcher Casey Prychak laced an RBI triple to right field scoring Easton Mains (hit by pitch) with Prychak touching home plate on a Chaney RBI triple to right.  Chaney later scored on a Cam Madsen double putting WSC in front 5-0.
After St. Anslem scored seven runs in the fifth to take a 7-5 lead, WSC got one run back in the sixth on a Nate Cunningham solo homer over the left field fence making the score 7-6.
The Hawks pushed the lead back to two at 8-6 in the top of the sixth with one run, but WSC roared back in the seventh with a pair of runs to knot the score at 8-8.  Mains had and RBI single to score Max Heard (single) with the first run while Braden Cannon reached on a fielder's choice and scored the tying run on a Hawks error.
The score stayed 8-8 until the bottom of the 10th inning.  Prychak walked to start the inning.  Pinch runner Adam Eggert moved to second when Madsen reached on an error.  Schuyler walked to load the bases with one out and Kneifl stepped up to the plate and on the first pitch hit a fly ball to center field that brought home Eggert with the walk-off winning run and a Wayne State 9-8 victory in 10 innings.
St. Anselm held an 11-8 edge in hits on the Wildcats.  Eight different WSC players had hits.  Chaney tripled, scored twice and had two stolen bases.  Cunningham hit a solo homer while Prychak tripled, scored a run and drove in one run.  Madsen and Schuyler each doubled.
Freshman starter Tyler Albert worked 4 2/3 innings, allowing seven hits and seven runs with eight strikeouts.  Lefthander Conlin Grady worked the next 1 1/3 innings and was charged with one run on one hit.  Kneifl came in and worked the next three innings of scoreless relief, fanning four batters while giving up three hits.  Cannon came on in the 10th and earned the win, now 1-1 on the season, striking out one and walking one batter.
Wayne State continues their trip in Cary, North Carolina Saturday morning at 10 a.m. facing Adelphi University of New York.
