Wayne State scored five runs in the sixth inning to snap a 2-2 tie as the Wildcats closed their spring break trip to Cary, North Carolina Sunday afternoon with a 9-3 win over Dominican University of New York. The Wildcats are now 10-9 on the season while the Chargers are 3-7.
The game was scoreless until the fourth inning when both teams scored one run.
Gabe Monosmith singled and scored on an RBI groundout by
Braden Cannon to tie the score at 1-1.
The 'Cats scored again in the fifth to make the score 2-1 as
Easton Leahy belted a solo homer to left field to start the inning.
After Dominican tied the game in the top of the sixth with one run, WSC took control of the contest with a five-run bottom of the sixth thanks to four hits.
Nate Cunningham's two-run triple to deep center field scored Monosmith (doubled) and
Max Heard (walk). Cannon later added a two-run double to bring home pinch-runner
Brayden Chaney and Cunningham while Cannon scored on an RBI groundout by
Easton Mains.
The 'Cats scored again in the seventh as
Tony Coniglio singled and scored on a double by Monosmith.
Both teams scored in the eighth to close the contest as Cannon walked and crossed home plate on a double by Leahy giving WSC the 9-3 win.
Wayne State had 10 hits in the win, led by Monosmith going 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles. Leahy was 2 for 3 with a homer, double and two RBI while Congilio finished 2 for 5 with a run scored. Cannon had a double and team-high three runs batted in.
WSC used five pitchers in the contest. Starter
Kadyn Van Hill worked the first four innings and allowed just one run on four hits with three strikeouts. Lefthander
Conlin Grady picked up the win, now 3-0 on the season, after working two scoreless innings and giving up just one hit with one strikeout.
Wayne State resumes NSIC play next weekend, scheduled to visit Minnesota Crookston for a three-game NSIC series on Saturday and Sunday weather permitting.
