Chloe Hanel had nine kills, four blocks and two service aces to lead #2 Wayne State College past Winona State 25-21, 25-23, 25-15 Friday evening in Northern Sun Conference volleyball played at Rice Arena in Wayne. The 'Cats are now 11-1 and 3-0 in the NSIC while Winona State is 2-7 and 1-2 in the league.
The Wildcats never trailed in the opening set finishing with a 25-21 win. Sophomore outside hitter
Delaney Miller had five kills in the first set for WSC.
The second set was a battle as WSC rallied from a 19-16 deficit to post a 25-23 set win in a set that saw 13 ties and five lead changes.
With WSU leading 19-16 following a Wildcat timeout, WSC got a Warrior service error followed by consecutive blocks from Hanel and
Mattie Kamery to even the score at 19-19.
Two kills from
Channatee Robles, a Winona State attack error and a Hanel spike gave the 'Cats a 23-21 advantage. A Warrior attack error and Hanel kill closed the set as the 'Cats picked up the 25-23 win.
WSC forced nine attack errors on Winona State in the second set that included three blocks. Robles had four kills with Hanel adding three while Robles and
Molly Romano each had service aces.
The third set was controlled by the Wildcats thanks to .300 hitting by WSC to go with three aces while forcing seven more Winona State errors for a 25-15 set win and match sweep.
Miller picked up four kills in the final set while Hanel added three kills and a pair of service aces.
Wayne State finished the match with a .208 hitting percentage compared to Winona's .179. WSU had six more kills than WSC, 43-37, but the 'Cats forced 21 attack errors and took advantage of nine service errors by the Warriors.
Hanel, Miller and Robles each had nine kills for Wayne State. Hanel added a team-high four blocks and had two service aces along with Romano. Defensive specialist
Reese Johnson accounted for 14 digs with
Mattie Kamery adding 13 and
Anna Borner 10. Romano handed out 29 set assists.
WSC is in action again Saturday afternoon as the Wildcats host #5 Concordia-St. Paul in Rice Arena starting at 1 p.m.
