SMSU downs Wayne State 4-1 in NSIC women's soccer

Southwest Minnesota State scored two goals in the first eight minutes and went on to a 4-1 Northern Sun Conference women's soccer over Wayne State in Marshall, Minnesota Sunday afternoon. The host Mustangs improved to 2-4-1 in the NSIC with the win and 3-11-2 overall while Wayne State remains winless in league play at 0-7 and 1-13-2 overall.

Wayne State outshot the Mustangs 10-7 in the contest, but could only muster an own goal in the 83rd minute as the Wildcats fell 4-1.  SMSU's Tatum Borstad scored at the 2:21 mark to give the Mustangs an early 1-0 lead.  Joelle Dean scored less then six minutes later to put SMSU up 2-0 8:03 into the game.  Ashley Elbers found the net from 40 yards out at the 27:36 mark to give SMSU a 3-0 lead at the intermission. 

Cait Miller scored 56 seconds into the second half to give SMSU a 4-0 lead until the Wildcats got on the board with an own goal to make the final score 4-1.  Freshman Emily Walker and sophomore Rachel Fuchs both saw action at goalkeeper for the Wildcats with Fuchs allowing just one goal and recording two saves in 46:34 while Walker allowed three goals in 43:26 of playing time.

Wayne State will host Doane College on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. in the final home game of the season.
