Bemidji State held on for a 77-70 victory over Wayne State in women's basketball on Saturday evening in Bemidji, Minnesota. The win moved Bemidji State to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the NSIC, while Wayne State dropped to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in the NSIC.
The Wildcats trailed 40-36 at the half, and never got closer than four points in the second half. For the game, Wayne State shot 43.6% from the field by hitting 24 of 55 shots. The 'Cats were 8-23 from behind the three point line for 34.8% and hit 14 of 20 free throws for 70% on the evening. The Beavers of Bemidji State hit 29 of 66 shots for 43.9%. Bemidji State made 18 of 24 free throws for 75%. The Beavers only attempted four three pointers, making one. The Beavers outrebounded the 'Cats 44-31 in the contest.
Teresa Case and Kati Jo Christensen each had 11 points to lead the Wayne State scoring attack while Jennifer Yee added 10. Case added eight assists, and Mara Hjelle had eight rebounds to lead the 'Cats. Stephanie Peterson had 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead Bemidji State. Colleen McKay had 17 points and Heidi Matzke added 16 for the host Beavers.
The Wildcats return to action Tuesday evening when they travel to Augustana for a 6 p.m. contest. Wayne State then returns home to take on the University of Mary on December 7th and Northern State on December 8th. Both of those contests are set to begin at 6 p.m. at Rice Auditorium.
