23rd-ranked Wayne State opened Northern Sun Conference volleyball play Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 loss at 11th-ranked Southwest Minnesota State in Marshall, Minnesota. Scores of the match were 30-22, 30-28 and 30-20. WSC falls to 7-4 overall and 0-1 in the NSIC while SMSU moves to 7-2 overall and 1-0 in league play.
SMSU hit .323 for the match compared to Wayne State's .127. Senior All-American middle hitter Emily Schroeder was the lone Wildcat in double figures hitting with 18 kills. Meredy Dubbs accounted for 12 digs followed by Laura Dolezal with 11 and freshman setter Jenna Jansen dished out 30 set assists.
For SMSU, Erin Contons recorded 17 kills with 13 digs. Sarah Quiram had 14 digs and Sara Graf was credited with 47 set assists.
Wayne State will play their first home match of the season Wednesday evening at Rice Auditorium as the Wildcats host the University of South Dakota in a 7:00 p.m. match.
