Wayne State 84 Minnesota, Crookston 47
Wayne State built a 46-19 halftime lead and cruised to a 84-47 win over Minnesota, Crookston on Saturday evening in Wayne. Wayne State moves to 15-5 overall and 8-3 in the NSIC with the win. Minnesota, Crookston falls to 6-14 overall and 2-9 in the NSIC with the loss. With a University of Mary 50-48 loss to Winona State, Wayne State now has sole possession of second place in the NSIC.
Wayne State jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. The 'Cats hit 17 of 36 shots for 47.2 percent in the first half while limiting Minnesota, Crookston to only 22.9 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes. Minnesota, Crookston never got closer than 24 points in the second half.
Wayne State shot 40.9 percent from the field for the game hitting 27 of 66 shots. The 'Cats hit 10 three pointers on the evening and hit 20 of 30 free throws for 66.7 percent. Minnesota, Crookston hit 19 of 68 shots on the evening for 27.9 percent. The Golden Eagles hit only two three pointers and made seven of 10 free throws in the game. Wayne State held a dominating 56-38 rebounding advantage.
Kati Jo Christensen scored a career-high 17 points to lead Wayne State in the win. Andrea Schoepf also added 17 points and JulieAnn Wagner added 12 points off the bench for Wayne State. Andrea Schoepf and Kylee McGill had eight rebounds apiece to lead Wayne State and Teresa Case handed out five assists on the evening. Jamie Zelinsky had 10 points to lead Minnesota, Crookston in the loss.
Wayne State will hit the road for games at Northern State and the University of Mary next weekend. Both games are set for 6:00.
