#1 Concordia, St. Paul 3 #23 Wayne State 1
NCAA Division II top-ranked Concordia University, St. Paul rallied from a one set deficit to defeat 23rd-ranked Wayne State College in Northern Sun Conference volleyball played Saturday in Wayne. Scores of the game was 17-25, 25-15, 25-18 and 26-24. Concordia, St. Paul remained unbeaten in the NSIC with a 16-0 league mark, improving to 27-1 overall, while Wayne State slipped to 21-6 overall and 10-5 in the NSIC.
Wayne State won the first set 25-17 over the Golden Bears, taking advantage of eight CU hitting errors. Concordia, St. Paul then pounded out 19 kills in the second set to even the game at 1-1 with a 25-15 win. The Wildcats struggled in the third set with nine hitting errors as CU won 25-18. The fourth set was a battle back and forth as CU hung on for the 26-24 win, taking the game 3-1.
Mindy Moody and Jennifer Hefner each recorded 10 kills to the Wildcats in hitting followed by Brittany Van Beek with nine. Meredy Dubbs had 27 digs followed by Diedra Artz with 11 while Artz was credited with 37 set assists.
For Concordia, St. Paul, Maria Steinhagen finished with 15 kills followed by Emily Palkert with 13. Whitney Meierotto ended with a double-double, accounting for 12 kills and 14 digs. Libero Mary Slinger finished with 21 digs to lead the Golden Bears while All-American setter Maggie McNamara finished with 58 set assists.
CU outhit WSC in the contest .282 to .156.
Wayne State will be on the road next weekend, traveling to #17 Minnesota Duluth Friday at 7:00 p.m. and at Bemidji State Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
