#17 Minnesota Duluth 3 #23 Wayne State 2
NCAA Division II 17th-ranked Minnesota Duluth rallied from a 2-1 deficit and defeated 23rd-ranked Wayne State College 3-2 in Northern Sun Conference volleyball played Friday evening in Duluth, Minnesota. Scores of the game were 25-16, 19-25, 15-25, 25-19 and 15-13. The host Bulldogs improve to 21-8 overall and 12-5 in the NSIC with the win while Wayne State falls to 21-7 overall and 10-6 in league play.
WSC trailed 10-6 in the fifth set, but scored five straight points to take an 11-10 lead following a UMD attack error. After a Mindy Moody kill gave WSC a 12-11 lead, Minnesota Duluth scored four of the last five points to rally for the 15-13 win in the fifth set, taking the match 3-2. Neither team hit well as UMD had 35 hitting errors with a .146 percentage while WSC had 28 errors and a .106 hitting percentage.
Sophomore middle hitter Jennifer Hefner was the lone Wildcat to reach double digits in kills with 12 followed by Mindy Moody with nine. Sophomore setter Diedra Artz was credited with 42 set assists while Meredy Dubbs paced the Wildcats on defense with 14 digs followed by Tessa Wietfeld with 13 and Brittany Van Beek added 10.
For Minnesota Duluth, Sarah Wyffels notched a game-high 16 kills followed by April Hansen with 14. Katie Gangelhoff was credited with 52 set assists and 16 digs while Rachel Jacobson accounted for a game-high 27 digs for the Bulldogs.
Wayne State will be in action again on Saturday afternoon visiting Bemidji State for a 4:00 p.m. Northern Sun Conference contest.
