Strong pitching leads WSC softball to sweep of Concordia-St. Paul

The Wayne State College softball team swept a doubleheader over Concordia-St. Paul on Tuesday afternoon in Wayne.  Scores of the games were 3-2 and 6-0.  WSC has won seven straight games and moved to 28-18 on the year and 12-6 in the NSIC.  Concordia-St. Paul fell to 24-17 overall and 11-5 in the NSIC with the losses.

In game one, Wayne State grabbed an early lead and held off a late Concordia-St. Paul rally to hold on for the 3-2 win.  WSC scored two runs in the first inning on RBI singles by Jennifer Radley and Valerie Robinson.  The 'Cats added one run in the second inning.  The score remained 3-0 until the top of the sixth inning when Concordia-St. Paul rallied for two runs.  However, the Golden Bears went down in order in the seventh inning and WSC secured the 3-2 win.  Sam Earleywine and Blaire Kuhl had two hits apiece for the WSC offense in game one.  Radley had two RBI's and Robinson had one for the 'Cats.  Katie Goetzinger (20-10) was solid on the mound for Wayne State allowing no runs and two hits with two walks and one strikeout in five innings pitched.  Keri Walsh pitched the final two innings for WSC giving up two runs and two hits with one walk and one strikeout. 

Wayne State blanked Concordia-St. Paul 6-0 in game two.  The 'Cats scored an unearned run in the second inning and broke the game open with three runs in the third.  Highlighting the Wildcat third inning was a two-RBI triple by Val Robinson.  WSC scored an unearned run in the fifth and sixth innings for the 6-0 final score.  Wayne State had eight hits in the game led by Robinson's 3 for 4 performance.  Dawn Spale, Amy Sandstrom, Katie Goetzinger, Amber Baird and Kiley Peterson also added hits for WSC.  Katie Goetzinger moved to 21-10 on the year for the 'Cats, allowing just three hits with two walks and four strikeouts in five innings pitched.  Keri Walsh worked the final two innings for Wayne State allowing only one hit with one walk.

It will be senior day tomorrow as the Wildcats host the University of Nebraska Omaha in a doubleheader starting at 2:00 at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex here in Wayne.
