#3 Minnesota State 86 Wayne State 68

NSIC Preseason Player of the Year Heather Johnson poured in a game-high 21 points to lift #3 Minnesota State past Wayne State 86-68 in Northern Sun Conference women's basketball Friday evening in Mankato, Minnesota.  The host Mavericks remained unbeaten on the season with the win, improving to 17-0 overall and 10-0 in the NSIC while Wayne State falls on the road for the first time this season (6-1), dropping to 9-8 overall and 6-4 in league play.

Wayne State never led in the game as the Mavericks used torrid shooting in the first half to set the tone for the game, making 17 of 27 shots (63 percent) to build a commanding 48-25 lead at intermission.  The Wildcats did outscore Minnesota State in the second half 43-38, but the outcome of the game was decided by the Mavericks' hot shooting in the first half and Minnesota State cruised to the easy victory.

Sophomore center Mara Hjelle was the lone Wildcat in double figures, recording her first career double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds, making 8 of 14 shots from the field.  As a team, WSC shot just 34 percent from the field on 24 of 71 shots.  The 'Cats were 6 of 24 (25 percent) from the three point line and 14 of 17 at the free throw stripe.

For Minnesota State, Johnson led four double figure scorers with her 21 points on 8 of 11 shooting from the field, including 4 of 6 behind the arc.  Alex Andrews added 14 points followed by Joanne Noreen with 13 and Liz Trauger 11 to round out the Mavericks double digit scorers.  MSU shot 52 percent from the field, connecting on 31 of 60 shots in the game, including 8 for 13 from the three point line.  The Mavericks drained 16 of 22 attempts at the free throw line for 73 percent.

Wayne State outrebounded Minnesota State 51-31 thanks to 12 caroms from Hjelle, but the Wildcats had 24 turnovers to just 13 for Minnesota State in the loss.

Wayne State will visit Southwest Minnesota State Saturday evening in a Northern Sun Conference contest starting at 6:00 p.m. in Marshall, Minnesota.
