Wayne State earned 5-1 and 8-1 wins over MSU Moorhead in an NSIC softball double-header on Wednesday afternoon in Wayne.  The victory in game one set a school record for wins in a season at Wayne State.  With the double-header sweep, WSC improved to 36-17 overall and 19-6 in the NSIC.  MSU Moorhead dropped to 9-28 overall and 5-18 in the NSIC with the losses.

In game one, Wayne State pounded out 13 hits while Katie Goetzinger and Amber Baird were solid on the mound in WSC's 5-1 win.  The 'Cats jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning.  With one out in the inning, Hannah Engelkamp and Blaire Kuhl each singled and scored on Sam Eaerleywine's two-run double to left center.  The score remained the same until the top of the fourth inning when MSU Moorhead's Casey Preston delivered an RBI single to cut the Wildcat lead to one at 2-1.  However, the 'Cats responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-1 lead.  Engelkamp had an RBI double and Amber Baird delivered an RBI single to highlight the three-run fifth inning for the Wildcats.  The Dragons were unable to rally late, and WSC settled for the 5-1 win.

Wayne State had 13 hits in game one compared to just four for MSU Moorhead.  Hannah Engelkamp went 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored to lead Wayne State offensively in game one.  Amy Sandstrom, Samantha Earleywine and Brittany Greenwood all added two hits for the 'Cats.  Katie Goetzinger earned the win on the mound for WSC and improved to 25-11 on the season.  Goetzinger allowed just one run and three hits with one walk and nine strikeouts in five innings of work.  Amber Baird pitched the final two innings for Wayne State and allowed just one hit with two strikeouts.  Casey Lindseth, Casey Preston, Katie Howland and Melissa Saylor had hits for MSU Moorhead in game one.  Kari Sagehorn (7-16) suffered the loss on the mound for the Dragons.  Sagehorn allowed five runs on 13 hits with one walk and two strikeouts in five innings.   

Wayne State again used solid pitching and timely hitting in the 8-1 win over the Dragons in game two.  MSU Moorhead scored first when Melissa Saylor led off the second inning with a solo homer to center field.  The 'Cats took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second on RBI singles by Brittany Greenwood and Alyssa Kirsch and added two more runs in the third on a sacrifice fly by Earleywine and a solo homer by Greenwood.  Wayne State added an unearned run in the fourth to take a 5-1 lead and scored another single run in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Kiley Peterson which made the score 6-1.  Wayne State closed out the scoring in game two with two more unearned runs on two MSU Moorhead errors for the final score of 8-1.

WSC had 10 hits in game two compared to just three for the Dragons.  MSU Moorhead committed four errors in the game.  Brittany Greenwood went 2 for 3 with a solo homer, two runs scored and two RBI's to lead Wayne State offensively in game two.  Kiley Peterson also went 2 for 3 with an RBI for the 'Cats.  Katie Goetzinger improved to 26-11 on the mound for WSC with another win in game two.  Goetzinger allowed just one run and three hits with seven strikeouts in four innings of work.  Amber Baird pitched the final three innings for WSC and allowed no hits with one walk and one strikeout.  Melissa Saylor went 1 for 3 with a homer for MSU Moorhead.  Taylor Falk (0-1) took the loss on the mound and allowed four runs and five hits with one walk and one strikeout in 2 2/3 innings pitched for the Dragons.    

Wayne State will travel to Marshall, Minnesota on Friday and Saturday for the 2009 Northern Sun Conference Softball Tournament.  Pairings will be released later tonight.
