The Wayne State College baseball team opened up their 2010 home schedule with a pair of conference wins over Minnesota-Duluth Sunday afternoon at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex defeating the Bulldogs 10-6 and 4-2. Newcomer Jarrett Jackson (Federal Way, Washington) made an impact in his first game as a Wildcat going 2 for 5 with three RBI's in game one. Sophmore Austen Wisroth pitched a complete game in the second game striking out eight batters. WSC is now 9-11 overall and 5-1 in the NSIC. The losses Drop the Bulldogs to 10-10 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
In game one, Wayne State got two runs in the second inning when Jake Ritzdorf used a sacrifice bunt to score Treye Hacker who had opened up the inning with a single to left field. Mike Bisenius later scored on a Brandon Polk single to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead. WSC would add a run in the third inning, but the Bulldogs battled back to tie the game a 3-3 thanks to five hits in the fourth inning.
UMD would then take a 5-4 lead in the top of the fifth inning, but Wayne State responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth with Jackson hitting a two run triple to right center field that scored John Plasha and Justin Beranek. WSC added four runs in the sixth inning the Wildcats only had two hits in the inning, but used three walks in the inning to expand their lead to 10-5. UMD added a run in the eighth, but Wayne State walked away with a 10-6 victory.
Senior John Snyder (2-3) got the win working five innings giving up seven hits and four runs. Tadd Johansen pitched a third of an inning giving up one run on two hits. Trevor Reeves got his first career save pitching the final three plus innings as Reeves gave up one run and fanned five batters.
WSC had seven hits in the ball game led by Jackson and Hacker who each had two hits. Hacker was 2 for 4 with two RBI's. Justin Beranek was 1 for 4 with an RBI and two tuns scored.
The second game saw Wayne State battle back to defeat the Bulldogs 4-2. UMD started off the scoring in the top of the fourth inning when the Bulldogs used a pair of doubles by Will Dahlgren and Anders Engberg to take a 2-0 lead. Wayne State would cut the lead to one in the bottom of the inning with the leadoff double by Nick Bidroski and wild pitch setup a sacrifice fly by Jackson to cut the Bulldogs lead to 2-1. WSC scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning thanks to a two out rally that was started by a Polk's base hit up the middle. Joe Wendte and Beranek were both hit by pitches to load the bases for Bidroski who slapped a base hit that scored Polk and Wendte to give the Wildcats a 3-2 lead. Beranek would then score on an error by the UMD shortstop to give WSC the 4-2 lead.
Wisroth (2-2) pitch seven innings in the victory fanning eight batters and only walking three. Wisroth gave up six hits and two earned runs. WSC had five hits in game two with Bidroski going 2 for 3 in the game with two RBI's and one run scored. Polk added two hits and also added a run scored. Hacker had the other Wildcat hit as the junior first baseman was 1 for 3 at the plate.
Wayne State will be at again on Monday afternoon hosting Minnesota Duluth in a Northern Sun Conference doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m.
