NCAA Division II 24th-ranked St. Cloud State held off a second half Wayne State rally to down the Wildcats 74-66 Saturday afternoon in the semi finals of the 2010 NSIC Sanford Health Men's Basketball Tournament in St. Cloud, Minnesota. The Huskies now take a 24-5 record into Sunday's title game while ending Wayne State's season at 14-15.
St. Cloud State opened the game with an early 8-0 run to take a 10-4 lead with 17:20 to play in the first half. A Brad Starken three pointer and Brett Spiker basket got the 'Cats within one at 10-9, but the Huskies scored the next eight points to lead 18-9 with 10:33 to play in the first half. Later in the half the 'Cats got within three points at 24-21 following an Elijah Miller jumper with 2:46 remaining in the half, but St. Cloud State finished strong with a 10-2 run giving the Huskies a 34-23 lead at the intermission.
The Huskies led by as many as 14 several times early in the second half before Wayne State came charging on. With SCSU leading 43-29 with 14:01 left to play, WSC went on a 16-5 run over the next 5:05 and pulled within three points at 48-45 following an Amry Shelby jumper with 8:56 left. The Wildcats stayed even with the Huskies and used a Jason Jensen three pointer with 4:15 to go to take their first lead since 4-2 as WSC held a 58-56 lead.
After the Huskies scored the next five points to go in front 61-58, the 'Cats used a Brad Starken free throw and another three from Jensen to take their final lead at 62-61 with 2:48 remaining. St. Cloud State used a Taylor Witt three pointer and a jumper from NSIC Player of the Year Matt Schneck to go up 66-62. Wayne State's Elijah Miller canned two free throws with 1:20 left to get the 'Cats within two at 66-64. Schneck made another jumper to give SCSU a 68-64 lead at the 1:02 mark. The Wildcats could not get shots to fall in the final minute and St. Cloud State made 6 of 6 free throws in the final 41 seconds to hold off the Wildcats 74-66.
Brett Spiker paced Wayne State with 18 points and 12 rebounds for his 14th double-double of the season. Freshman guard Amry Shelby added 15 points followed by Jason Jensen with 12 and Elijah Miller 11. The Wildcats shot 51 percent from the field, making 26 of 51 shots overall while hitting 4 of 12 behind the three point line. WSC was 10 of 16 at the charity stripe.
For St. Cloud State, Taylor Witt poured in a game-high 21 points to lead four players in double figures. Matt Schneck contributed 15 points and 12 rebounds with Andrew Bernstetter (13 points) and Brett Putz (10 points) also reaching double figures. The Huskies shot 54.5 percent making 24 of 44 shots from the field. SCSU was 8 of 13 (61%) from the three point line and 18 of 25 at the free throw stripe.
The Huskies outrebounded WSC 30-24 as Schneck had 12 boards for St. Cloud State while Spiker grabbed 12 caroms for the Wildcats. Both teams had 15 turnovers in the game.
