Wayne State baseball team breezes past Minnesota, Crookston

             The Wayne State College baseball team took two games from Minnesota, Crookston on a windy day Saturday afternoon at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex in Wayne. The Wildcats defeated the Golden Eagles 13-3 in seven innings in the first game. In the second game WSC downed UMC 7-6 as the Wildcats' bullpen halted a late inning comeback by the Golden Eagles. The sweep makes Wayne State 24-21 overall and 19-10 in the NSIC and the pair of losses drops Minnesota, Crookston to 3-43 and 0-30 in the conference.

            UMC jumped out to an early lead in the first game as the Golden Eagles scored one run in the first inning. The Wildcats added a run in the bottom of the first as John Plasha ripped an RBI single to centerfield to tie the game at 1-1.

            The Wildcats would take control in the bottom of the fourth inning as WSC erupted for seven runs on six hits in the inning. The frame was highlighted by three doubles by Nick Bidroski, Jake Rizdorf and Plasha that drove in five runs. Justin Beranek also added a two RBI single in the inning.

            The 'Cats added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. The inning was highlighted by another two RBI single by Beranek. Joe Wendte and Brandon Polk also added RBI singles in the inning to give WSC a 12-3 advantage. Wendte would add another RBI single in the seventh to give WSC a 13-3 win in seven innings.

            Beranek was 2 for 4 on in the first game with four RBI's. Josh Nielsen was 3 for 5 with two runs scored. Wendte was 2 for 3 with two RBI's and two runs scored. John Snyder (6-5) got the win for Wayne State pitching five innings allowing seven hits and one earned run with six strikeouts. Reid Lancaster pitched two innings allowing one run on two hits.

            The Wildcats jumped on the Golden Eagles early in the second game scoring three runs in the bottom of the opening frame. The inning was highlighted by an RBI single by Mike Bisenius and an RBI double by Ritzdorf. The Wildcats added a run inning the second in as Nielsen drove home Wendte who hit a triple to centerfield to take a 4-0 lead. The Golden Eagles added a run in the top of the fourth inning to cut the Cats' advantage to 4-1. Wayne State added one run in both the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings to take a 6-1 advantage.   

            The Golden Eagles soared back into the game in the top of the sixth inning as UMC added four runs to cut the deficit to 6-5. Wayne State added a run in the bottom of the sixth when Bidroski hit a sacrifice fly to give WSC an insurance run and a 7-5 lead. Minnesota, Crookston added a run in the top of the seventh, but left the tying run on second as the Wildcats won 7-6.

            Wendte and Bisenius were both 2 for 3 with two runs scored. Beranek added a hit and two RBI's for Wayne Sate. Austen Wisroth picked up the win to make him 5-3 on the season. Wisroth pitched five innings allowing three runs on three hits and six strikeouts. Josh Nelsen picked up the save (3) pitching the final two innings allowing only two hits. 

            Wayne State will close out the regular season at Sunday afternoon vs. Minnesota, Crookston starting at noon at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex.
