Junior forward Ashley Arlen recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 24 points and 10 rebounds to boost #7 Wayne State College in a 76-52 rout of Winona State in Northern Sun Conference women's basketball played Friday evening in Wayne, Nebraska. The Wildcats extend their win streak to 14 straight games and have now won 21 in a row at Rice Auditorium, improving to 15-1 overall and 12-0 in the NSIC while second place Winona State falls four games back of the Wildcats in the NSIC standings at 8-4 in league play and 12-4 overall.
Wayne State led from start to finish as the 'Cats jumped out to an early 7-0 lead. Winona State got within one point at 10-9 with 13:42 to go in the half, but that's as close as the Warriors would get. A three pointer by Alyssa Fischbach gave WSC their first double digit lead of the night at 24-14 with 8:51 remaining in the half. WSC then took their biggest lead of the half right before halftime as Ellen Hansen made a layup to give the 'Cats a 41-28 lead at halftime.
The Wildcats held a double digit lead the entire second half and led by as many as 26 points at 76-50 on a Julie Ann Wagner three point play with 55 seconds to go in the game as Wayne State finished with a convincing 76-52 win over the second place team in the Northern Sun Conference.
Arlen's 24 points and 10 rebounds paced Wayne State while Mara Hjelle accounted for 16 points. WSC shot 28 of 57 from the field for 49 percent, making 6 of 22 three point shots. The 'Cats were 14 of 19 at the free throw stripe.
For Winona State, Natalie Gigler scored 21 points with Michelle McDonald also reaching double figures with 10. The Warriors shot 40.7 percent from the field making 22 of 54 shots. Winona State was 3 of 11 behind the three point line and 5 of 7 at the charity stripe.
Winona State held a slight 34-32 edge in rebounding over WSC thanks to seven rebounds by McDonald while Arlen led all rebounders for Wayne State with 10 caroms. WSC forced Winona State into 23 turnovers while the Wildcats had 15 in the contest.
Wayne State will be at home again Saturday afternoon as Upper Iowa visits Rice Auditorium in a 4:00 p.m. Northern Sun Conference contest.
