#6 Wildcats close non-conference slate with 91-52 win over William Penn

            Redshirt freshman Jennifer Kalbfell scored a career-high 22 points off the bench and senior All-American forward Ashley Arlen recorded her fourth double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds to power #6 Wayne State College in a 91-52 win over William Penn University in non-conference women's college basketball played Saturday afternoon at Rice Auditorium in Wayne.  The Wildcats finish non-conference play at 6-0 while the Lady Statesmen drop to 2-9 on the season.

            Wayne State led from start to finish in the contest.  The Wildcats took their first double digit lead at 24-14 with 9:11 to play in the first half on a Jennifer Kalbfell layin.  Leading 34-22 with 4:01 to go before halftime, WSC closed the first half on a 11-2 run to take a commanding 45-24 lead at intermission.  The 'Cats made 20 of their 35 field goals in the first half for 57 percent to take control of the contest.

            The second half saw WSC continue their strong shooting as the 'Cats opened the half with a 12-2 run in the first 5:30 to go in front 57-26 with 14:29 to play.  The Wildcats played the final 10 minutes with reserves and maintained their sizeable lead going on to the 91-52 win over William Penn.

            Arlen, a 6-2 senior forward from Cascade, Iowa, finished with 23 points and 11 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season.  Kalbfell, a 6-1 redshirt freshman forward from Lakeville, Minnesota, produced 22 points in just 21 minutes of playing time making 11 of 14 shots from the floor.  Senior guard Clare Duwelius also reached double digits with 11 points in the win.

            Wayne State shot 55.2 percent from the field, making 37 of 67 shots.  The 'Cats were 7 of 16 (43.8%) behind the three point line and 10 of 14 at the charity stripe.

            For William Penn, sophomore Orielle Thomas poured in 21 points to go with eight rebounds to lead the Lady Statesmen.  Katie Golomski chipped in with 12 points while Megan Evangelista scored 11.  The Lady Statesmen made 20 of 60 shots for 33 percent, including 7 of 20 from the three point line.  WPU was 5 of 10 at the free throw line.

            WSC won the rebounding battle over William Penn 43-32 thanks to Arlen's 11 caroms while Duwelius added seven.  The 'Cats had a season-high 21 assists with Ali Schwartzwald and Ashton Yossi credited with four apiece.

            Wayne State begins Northern Sun Conference play at home next weekend, entertaining unbeaten Minnesota State Friday evening at 6:00 p.m. followed by a Saturday afternoon 4:00 p.m. contest against Southwest Minnesota State.
